Deutsche Post plans acquisitions to expand in Central Europe

Deutsche Post AG plans to make additional acquisitions in Central Europe in order to expand its business in the rapidly growing region, Claude Begle, managing director of DHL Express Central Europe, told the Financial Times Deutschland. ‘We are determined to rapidly expand our Central European operations,’ Begle told the newspaper. Begle, who also serves as the chief operating officer for DHL Express Germany, declined to name any specific acquisitions targets. However, financial industry sources said Deutsche Post is close to acquiring two more parcel delivery firms.

DHL announces rates for 2006

DHL Express (USA) today announced new rates effective February 5, 2006, in line with recently announced annual increases in the express and parcel industry, including a 5.5% increase for DHL Domestic Air Express and International Express and a 3.9% rise for DHL Ground Service. Concurrent with the 2006 rate changes, DHL will institute a cap of 14.5% on its published fuel surcharge for Domestic Air Express and International Express, a move that will allow customers to better predict and control their transportation spending, and will reduce the index used to determine its air fuel surcharge by 2%, resulting in an effective rate increase for DHL Domestic Air Express and International Express services of 3.5%. The fuel surcharge index calculation for Ground products remains unchanged. Rates for DHL@Home, the company’s expedited business-to-residence shipping service, will increase an average of 6.5%, effective January 2, 2006.

DHL to increase investment in Pakistan

DHL has reaffirmed its commitment to Pakistan with plans to upgrade its business activity and investments. The company has already announced it would invest up to dollars eight million in Pakistan in the next three years, including the construction of a new state-of-the-art airport ‘Airside Facility in Karachi’ and upgrading of its service centres. Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, DHL Express – Asia Pacific Chief Executive Officer Scott Price said, “DHL sees bright prospects in the region and particularly in Pakistan becoming a major hub for industrial growth. There has been significant business growth in the region and Pakistan’s investment-friendly policies have started to attract international attention. ” “In recent months, there have been clear indications of strong macro-economic fundamentals in Pakistan. At the same time, the region is seeing very buoyant levels of intra-Asian and international trade,” he added.

70 staff go at DHL Express

DHL has confirmed that it is to make up to 70 people redundant across its Express business in the UK in a drive to improve efficiency.
A spokesman, denying an anonymous telephone call to Motor Transport saying that 250 people were to go, says: ‘We are currently in consultation with the employees and union involved.’

DHL Express opens terminal in Gdansk, Poland

DHL Express opened a new parcel terminal in Gdansk, northern Poland, it was reported on November 25, 2005. DHL Express invested 3.3 mln euro (USD3.9 mln) in the Gdansk parcels sorting and processing centre, which is the fifth one opened in 2005. The terminal is expected to process 15,000 parcels per day.
