According to Amadou Diallo, CEO for South Asia Pacific, the company has experienced strong double-digit growth rates in Indonesia over the past few years, and will continue to invest in the region.
In addition to the new and expanded offices, DHL Global Forwarding will also invest in increasing and training its workforce, and developing its infrastructure to improve operational efficiency.
DHL Global Forwarding recently restructured its regional business into North Asia Pacific and South Asia Pacific operations. As part of the new South Asia Pacific region, Indonesia will be better placed to develop stronger trade ties and develop better trade lanes with other markets in South Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
The company’s current expansion plans build on the recent USD 3 million investment in a facility in Jakarta close to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and not far from the port of Tanjung Priok.
Foreign express-delivery companies operating in China including DHL, FedEx, TNT and UPS are fighting new legislation they say will undermine their ability to compete in the market for delivering documents and packages domestically. A new provision in the draft version of China’s Postal Law forbids foreign companies from investing in the domestic letter delivery business. Foreign delivery firms, most of which have been operating in China through joint ventures or other local operations, fear that the provision will make it harder to compete with China Post, the country’s state-owned postal service. China’s legislature says it will accept comments on the law until November 30. Total revenue in China’s postal system was USS 12.7 billion last year, with express delivery accounting for more than a third of the total.

DHL plans to eliminate more than a third of the 18 million paper invoices it sends to European customers every year by 2010. The firm will do this by offering customers an e-billing option, whereby users login to an online portal to view and receive information about their invoices. As a result, the courier expects to save the equivalent of 2,400 trees and 600 tonnes of C02 a year.
DHL has already begun using e-billing in Europe, and expects to continue its existing success.
“The success of our e-billing project has already delivered significant environmental savings but this is a drop in the ocean compared to what we intend to achieve in the near future,” said Brian Thumwood, DHL’s E-Billing Manager for Europe.
