Romanian Competition Council approves acquisition of Curiero

Romania’s Competition Council gave RTC Holding, one of the largest distribution and retail groups in Romania, the green light to take over Romanian major courier company Curiero and its subsidiaries Curiero Express and Curiero Spedition, according to Mediafax News Brief Service.

The Council confirmed that the transaction does not breach competition rules. RTC Holding will operate the parcel and freight transport services of Curiero through its existing subsidiary TCE Logistica, another Romanian major courier operator.

Two months ago, TCE and Curiero announced plans to merge their businesses in order to strengthen their competitive position targeting combined revenues of EUR 30 million this year. TCE, the smaller of the two companies, yet financially a stronger one, recorded revenues of EUR 11 million last year while Couriero had revenues of EUR 14 million.

There have been several major transactions in the Romanian CEP market this year, including DHL’s acquisition of Cargus, GeoPost’s purchase of a 80 pct stake in Pegasus and the UPS buyout of local partner TCS. The Romanian courier services market is estimated at EUR 200 million.

Pallet scanner boosts bottom line for DHL

DHL has installed a pallet measuring system at its international gateway in London Colney to enable it to weigh measure and scan large pallets quickly.

Angus MacDougall, DHL’s International Gateway manager, says: “When large parcels and pallets have a low overall weight, we calculate their shipment cost according to their volumetric or dimensional weight – the amount of space they take up in a vehicle or aircraft.”

“While measuring smaller parcels is standard practice in the transport and logistics industries, measuring large pallets is often very difficult using conventional technology, so their dimensions often have to be manually measured and recorded. This is obviously a time-consuming process and is not cost-effective.

“What we needed was a product that could quickly, reliably and accurately capture and record a pallet’s weight, volume and barcode information and transfer this information in a format compatible with our information management system,” he says.

Deutsche Post may pay further three-digit mln dollar sum in U.S. revamp

Deutsche Post AG. may pay an additional three-digit million dollar sum in the announced restructuring of the company’s U.S. DHL business, Financial Times Deutschland reported, citing company sources.

The amount comes on top of the previously announced costs of USD 2 billion for the turnaround programme at the struggling unit, it added.

In May, the company said the loss-making U.S. operations of its DHL express unit will tie up in domestic and international airfreight shipments with United Parcel Service Inc. and will launch a cost-cutting programme.

The plans also involve the closure of a logistics hub at Wilmington, Ohio, while threatening up to 8,000 jobs at airline ABX.

Last week, Deutsche Post Chief Executive Frank Appel defended planned job cuts at the company’s U.S. DHL business, insisting in response to criticism voiced by U.S. politicians that the reductions are needed to turn the division around.

ABX Air finalizes severance and retention plans

ABX Air, Inc., announced it has reached an agreement with DHL on severance and retention plans for impending job reductions.

Following a period of voluntary reductions, ABX Air will serve Workers’ Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notices to approximately 200 employees next week. Government officials will be notified as well. Workers will be leaving jobs no later than 60 days from the day they receive the WARN notices.

This reduction is a result of DHL reducing 23 ABX Air DC-9 aircraft this year. These fleet reductions are the first associated with the plan DHL announced at the end of May. DHL has indicated to ABX Air that the DC-9 reductions will continue until all ABX Air DC-9s are parked sometime in 2009.

To assist in the transition for dislocated employees, ABX Air is working closely with the State Rapid Response Team and members of the Five Star Job Centers of Southwest Ohio, who are also coordinating with other surrounding counties. ABX Air has set up an onsite Transition Center to facilitate access to the available support services. Full- and part-time employees will be eligible to receive severance options, which include continued health and welfare coverage. All of these measures are intended to help dislocated workers bridge the employment gap.

ABX Air expects that additional notices will be necessary as more DC-9s are removed from the fleet. ABX Air’s DC-9 schedule of reductions is not affected by the discussions between DHL and UPS, but by DHL’s schedule to park the aircraft, as well as other ABX Air business adjustments.
