Deutsche Post to set up some 1,500 points of sale by the end of 2008

Deutsche Post will start expanding its points of sale for stamps and prepaid Paketmarken in the coming weeks across Germany.

Overall some 1,500 further points of sale are to be set up by the end of the year at locations which experience high customer traffic in addition to the existing 300 points of sale of this kind. Deutsche Post is working in cooperation with retailers to provide these points of sale.

Additionally to some 14,000 retail outlets already in existence the new points of sale will give Deutsche Post customers a supplementary source to obtain stamps and DHL Paketmarken. Stamps will continue to be available around the clock at 3,700 stamp vending machines and DHL Paketmarken at some 1,000 Packstations, set to rise to 2,500 by 2009.

Pre-franked packages and parcels can be taken to Packstations independently of retail outlet opening hours. Shipments with DHL Paketmarken can also be sent at any time of day or night via the 1,000 DHL Paketboxes across Germany in the same way that franked letters are posted in collection boxes.

With the new point of sale format the company hopes to further expand its service to customers, strengthen its own business and better position itself with regard to its competitors. Through cooperation with local businesses Deutsche Post customers who are simply buying stamps will benefit from the favorable opening hours at local retailers and can thus make use of additional contact points for two of the most frequently requested mail products.

DHL and METRO Group start largest RFID rollout in France

DHL and METRO Group are starting the first national rollout of radio frequency identification (RFID) in France.

Beginning in the fall of 2008, DHL will equip all shipments to the 89 Metro Cash & Carry self-service wholesale stores in France with RFID transponders and read them out along the entire supply chain.

Some 1.3 million pallets per year will be fitted with the RFID tags to facilitate contactless and automated monitoring of the supply chain. In taking this step, DHL and METRO Group are initiating the largest RFID rollout in French retail logistics.

METRO Group is also the first retail company to join the DHL Innovation Initiative, whose members as yet are primarily technology companies.

DHL expects the major project to send a signal to the entire area of retail logistics as well as to other segments of the logistics industry.

With this project METRO Group continues to drive forward the international deployment of the technology.

In the RFID project, five DHL food logistics centers will equip all shipments to the self-service wholesale stores with RFID tags. These RFID transponders are read out during the loading process, and the data are electronically transmitted to the individual stores.

When the shipments arrive at the recipient’s facilities, the tags are read out again and the data are automatically checked against the order.

Wal-Mart ends merchandise flight with DHL (U.S)

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ended its agreement to have DHL fly Wal-Mart merchandise nightly from Fayetteville, Ark., shortly after DHL’s May 28 announcement that it intended to hire United Parcel Service for its U.S. cargo airlift work, according to a pilot who flew the route for ASTAR Air Cargo, a DHL contractor.
The flights typically carried 40,000 pounds of jewelry each night for Wal-Mart, Pebler said.
Wal-Mart quit using DHL for the flight from Fayetteville, where it has a jewelry distribution and repair center, because DHL had changed its flight route patterns in ways that didn’t serve all the locations Wal-Mart has, said Dan Fogleman, a spokesman for the retailer. Fayetteville, about 30 miles from Wal-Mart’s corporate office in Bentonville, Ark., was among the areas affected by the DHL route changes, Fogleman said.
Fogleman declined to say how much additional business Wal-Mart does with DHL, or whether the retailer has shifted any of its shipping business to DHL competitors UPS or Federal Express.
DHL declined to discuss its business with Wal-Mart.

SkyPostal Networks, Inc. Announces second quarter results

SkyPostal announced financial results for the second quarter of 2008. Net income was USD 378,487 principally due to nonrecurring credits resulting from the reversal of excess of value of put options over estimated fair value of the company’s shares.

The results include sales of USD 2,091,313 versus the previous year’s second quarter revenues of USD 2,143,959. For the 6 months ended June 30, 2008, sales totaled USD 4,532,113 or a 16.5pct increase over the same 6 month period ended June 30, 2007. After producing a 39.7pct increase in sales in the first quarter over the same period 2007, the second quarter results indicate a softening in the growth of international mail resulting from the overall US economic slowdown.

Total tonnage handled increased by 20pct for the 6 months ended June 30, 2008 versus the same period ended June 30, 2007.

Although financial results reflected increased tonnage and revenue for the six months ended June 30, 2008, net loss for the first half 2008 totaled USD 641,234 or USD .02 per share. The net loss increase was in part due to nonrecurring and noncash expenses.

The opening up of a sort facility at Newark Airport coupled with the Company’s recently signed agreement with DHL Global Mail will permit SkyPostal to expand its mail delivery service to Europe. In addition, the company is introducing a service targeted at US internet marketers that will permit them to market their products to upscale LAC consumers by eliminating the costly risks of shipping by parcel post via the public UPU Public Postal Network.

SkyPostal anticipates continued growth in the balance of the year, expecting to increase its market share of the nontime critical mail delivery segment through several acquisition opportunities.

DHL expands within SAARC region

DHL is looking at expanding its business within the SAARC region (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) with an integrated product portfolio that will bolster transportation and trade between SAARC nations.
DHL is the first logistics player to foray into the SAARC segment and plans to service the estimated 120 pound Express market share in the region.
This set of innovative logistics solutions will help in quicker transit times, better customer service through online track and trace, one invoice, door-to-door delivery and special SAARC zone pricing.
These services use DHL’s enhanced infrastructural support to gain direct connections to key SAARC destinations – Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
It has been observed that trade can significantly increase once trade barriers are lifted. According to an AT Kearney study in 2007, with implementation of NAFTA, ASEAN EU in 2003, trade grew significantly by 44 pct, 49 pct & 63pct respectively since implementation.
