Brown urges McCain to use clout to save Wilmington jobs

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, urged Republican presidential candidate John McCain to press DHL and its German owner, Deutsche Post, to preserve jobs that could be lost if DHL hires United Parcel Service for its U.S. cargo airlift work.

McCain, the Arizona senator, scheduled a campaign stop in Wilmington today (Aug. 7), to meet privately with community activists trying to save at least 8,000 jobs at DHL’s Wilmington air freight hub. McCain was also to visit Lima.

The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reported on Wednesday that Washington lobbyist Rick Davis, now McCain’s top campaign adviser, made hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees lobbying Congress to allow the 2003 deal in which Deutsche Post bought Airborne Express to form DHL’s U.S. business. The Washington Post had a similar report in June.

Brown, noting the Cleveland news report, publicly urged McCain on Wednesday to send Davis to Germany so that Davis could use his contacts to lobby for preserving the Wilmington jobs.

In 2003, some in Congress had expressed concern about foreign ownership of a U.S. cargo transport company, before the DHL purchase of Airborne Express was allowed.

Joseph Teuchert, a Wilmington-based pilot for ASTAR Air Cargo that is a contract delivery carrier for DHL in the United States, said he expects to be in the meeting Thursday with McCain.

Wilmington Mayor David Raizk said he and others trying to preserve the Wilmington jobs met privately with Obama just before the Illinois senator’s public appearance July 11 at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton.

McCain campaigned Wednesday in Jackson, Ohio. He and Democratic opponent Barack Obama have been campaigning across Ohio and Michigan in recent weeks.

DHL offers clients discounts on bulk cargo

Under the new pricing regime, any shipments weighing more than 51 kilogrammes will enjoy a tariff discount of between 35 and 45 per cent if they are headed to some select 27 destinations.

Consignments from the destinations are also covered by the promotion, which runs until December.

Lawrence Yumbya, the National Sales Manager at DHL said the offer was meant to drive up shipment volumes while easing the burden on customers at this time when the global economy is feeling the heat from high oil prices and turbulence from America’s sub-prime mortgage crisis.

The promotion covers Botswana, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and the Sudan. Others are Tanzania, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The United Kingdom, USA, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and United Arab Emirates are also on the list.

The good news comes three months after DHL unveiled a USD 474 million shipment hub in Europe to improve on its deliveries.

The facility, which is located at the Leipzig-Halle airport in Germany, is expected to reduce DHL’s shipment running time to half, translating into faster deliveries across the globe.

It has the capacity to handle about 60 aircraft per day and to process about 1,500 tonnes of freight.

European Airline Traffic data

The Association of European Airlines has released traffic and capacity data for its members in June 2008.

Following a better-than-expected set of results in May, the June figures more clearly reflected the depressed situation of the market. Year-on-year traffic growth slowed to 1.6pct which, coupled with a 4.0pct increase in capacity, led to a substantial fall in load factor, by 1.9 percentage points to 77.4pct.

Decreases were recorded in Domestic operations (-6.7pct) and on the North Atlantic (-0.2pct). The normally buoyant European cross-border markets grew by 3.2pct and Europe-Far East by just 0.5pct. Regions which continued to post strong growth were the South Atlantic – which, at plus 10.3pct nevertheless suffered a heavy loss in load factor – and the Middle East, with +6.9pct.

Preliminary results for July, based on weekly reports, indicate a growth figure perhaps a percentage point better than in June, driven by a slight recovery in North Atlantic and Far Eastern flows, although both remain substantially depressed. Load factors are expected to show a further decline, although less dramatic than in June.

DHL and TNT recently joined the association with effect from July 1, taking membership to 35 airlines.

Isle of Man distribution firm to use innovative PODXchange system

An innovative system for tracking parcels and freight is being rolled out by distribution firm Manx Independent Carriers.

The company, which operates 120 vehicles from Skelmersdale and Douglas, is using a new international databank called PODXchange developed by technology company NetDespatch. Drivers are being equipped with special mobile devices incorporating barcode scanners and a touchsceen.

When deliveries are made and signed for, details of the shipment held in the barcode can be transmitted live to the web portal along with the captured electronic signature. The data as well as electronic signatures is then transformed into the appropriate carrier format and transmitted to Manx Independent Carriers’ customers including most major UK parcel carriers.

Manx Independent Carriers delivers on behalf of major parcel carriers including Fedex, UPS, DPD, Citylink, Parcelnet and Amtrak. Using one device, the firm can now provide a live signature proof of delivery (POD) to any of these companies.

First used in the Scottish Highlands for parcel deliveries handled by AJG, the system is being implemented by Manx Independent Carriers so that it can be used for all types of deliveries.

Round one saw more than 8,500 participants from over 120 countries. Now it’s down to the best 100 teams, each with 5 players, to master the unique online strategy game.
While the players used the first round to build up their country’s leading express courier company, phase two will be about taking on the global market. At the same time, business models will be expanded to include other logistics services such as air travel and sea cargo.

At the start of 2009, the ten best teams of this competition will meet at Deutsche Post World Net’s headquarters in Bonn, Germany, and contend in the final round of DHL Fast Forward.

In mid-April, DHL launched its international Discover Logistics initiative under the patronage of German Secretary of State, Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The aim of Discover Logistics is to open up the exciting and fast-growing logistics industry to as many talented newcomers as possible and give them a good idea of career perspectives available in the logistics industry.

On top of in-depth industry knowledge and business expertise, the second phase of DHL Fast Forward will require excellent communication skills and the ability to organize teamwork effectively across national borders and different cultural backgrounds. It will take seven weeks in total, and this time everyone who battled it out on their own in the first phase will have to show their ability to contribute to a team effort.

The winning team is in for EUR50,000 worth of prizes, including management training, travel vouchers and opportunities to make invaluable contacts from all corners of the world’s largest logistics employer.
