DHL forwarding division expands in China

DHL’s freight forwarding division, DHL Global Forwarding, has opened three new branches in inland China that will give the integrator greater access to and from the hinterland.

The three new branches are Changsha in Hunan Province, Hefei in Anhui Province and Changchun in Jilin province, all second tier cities in inland China with booming economies and great potential in manufacturing, electronics and the automotive industries.

In the past few years, over USD 30 million worth of investments have been made by DHL Global Forwarding in China to consolidate its market leading position. To further strengthen the position and maintain sustainable growth, an additional USD 20 million will be invested in the next few years.

The new branches will offer DHL Global Forwarding’s international freight forwarding services, such as international airfreight, international ocean freight, trucking and customs clearance, in addition to domestic airfreight, which is one of the key service offerings that will provide support for customers with pan-China distribution capabilities from central and western areas.

With the opening of the three new branches, the network of DHL Global Forwarding China expands to 26 cities, with 47 locations across China, including 40 branch offices and seven representative offices.

Cardo Supplies Complete Door and Docking Solutions for DHL’S New Terminal in Gothenburg

Within its division Door & Logistics Solutions, with its corporate brand Crawford, Cardo has been commissioned to supply door and docking systems for DHL Express’s new terminal in Gothenburg which is being established in cooperation with Skanska. The order comprises 139 doors and 111 docking systems as well as a 5-year maintenance and warranty agreement.

The new terminal consists of a transshipment facility and offices covering approximately 20,000 square meters. The project was started during the fourth quarter of 2007 and is planned to be ready for use in the first quarter of 2009.

DHL Express has also chosen to invest in Crawford Dock Management – a software-based system for the monitoring and follow-up of inventory and truck traffic at complex logistics centers. Among other things, the system provides DHL Express with information on how the terminal utilizes its doors and docking units, generating a basis for decisions on optimizing internal logistics. Crawford Dock Management also sends an alarm signal via SMS or e-mail if there are any faults or when it is time for preventive maintenance, all to ensure optimal availability.

DHL Express is investing in technical solutions that, among other things, promote good ergonomics. For example, the company has chosen dock levelers with telescopic aluminum lips that provide a smooth transition. These prevent work-related injuries to knees and backs and reduce wear on forklifts. DHL Express has also chosen electrical operation of all doors, giving a more comfortable work environment and minimizing energy losses.

SNCF may spend another 2 bln to 3 bln euros after Geodis acquisition – chairman

SNCF may spend another 2 billion to 3 billion euros on investments on top of the 600 million it is offering to pay for shares it does not already own in Geodis, Guillaume Pepy, chairman of the state-owned railway operator, told Le Figaro newspaper.

He plans further acquisitions, including an imminent one in Europe, and he is interested in port services to complete the company’s offering, Pepy said in an interview with the daily.

‘In a few days we will announce the acquisition of a continental European rail operator, which will open the door for us to new countries, notably Eastern Europe,’ he said.

The acquisition of Geodis, in which SNCF currently owns 42.37 percent, will make the transport of goods the group’s biggest division in terms of sales, Pepy said.

SNCF-Geodis will be among the world’s top five logistics groups, behind Deutsche Post AG unit DHL, Deutsche Bahn and Kuehne & Nagel International AG, the SNCF chairman said.

The Geodis deal will lift SNCF’s debt to equity ratio from 0.5 to 0.6, which is still only one-third of the level of Deutsche Bahn, and the imminent acquisition will not fundamentally alter those figures, he said.

‘That means we can still envisage profitable investments of 2 billion to 3 billion euros,’ Pepy said.

Shares in Geodis soared 30 percent today after Pepy unveiled that SNCF plans to offer 135 euros per share for the rest of the transport company.
