DTDC at centre of Indian consolidation speculation

Indian parcels company DTDC is at the centre of speculation over the next phase of consolidation in the country’s express and parcels industry. DTDC is the third-largest domestic express and parcels operator in India according to the forthcoming “CEP Market Fact Sheet India” from CEP-Research.

The Economic Times newspaper has reported that GeoPost may acquire a 10% stake in the company in a transaction under which founder and majority owner Subhasish Chakraborty would reduce his holding from 60% to 50%. The newspaper quoted Chakraborty as saying that he is in talks with several international players but he declined to give any more details.

Financial investor Reliance Capital, part of the Anil Ambani Group, bought a 40% stake in the Bangalore-based company earlier this year, and Chakraborty has said in the past that he aims to grow through acquisitions. The company recently signed a cooperation deal with Hong Kong-based Kerry Logistics for India-China services.

The Economic Times also reported that Reliance Capital might attempt “a game-changing deal” by trying to buy cargo company Gati though DTDC. But Gati senior executives denied the company was up for sale, saying they were only considering selling a minority stake.

The fast-growing Indian express and parcels market is increasingly attracting foreign investment. DHL is set to take full control of its Indian subsidiary, Blue Dart Express, and TNT announced at the start of the month that it is buying road express company Speedage.

Finland – TeliaSonera Finland, DHL in voice & data services deal

TeliaSonera Finland and DHL have signed an agreement on voice and data services. The agreement covers for example about 1,300 mobile phone subscriptions, their switchboard services and several hundred vehicle terminal data subscriptions. The data transmission takes place based on GPRS or 3G, depending on the situation. DHL’s internal voice traffic will be transferred as IP-based into the DataNet-based data communications network that has already been in the company’s use and was delivered by TeliaSonera Finland.

DHL freezes the way we live now.

The NHS has no doubt made an excellent choice in awarding a 10-year, Pounds 1.6bn contract to DHL to handle its purchasing and delivery of everything from catheters to paper clips.

DHL is, of course, a fearless logistics group that delivers to Afghanistan, Iraq and North Korea. Only problem is that it sometimes refuses to venture into scarier places such as . . . east London.

Not-so-intrepid DHL Express admits it recently decided against sending its vans to Canning Town, which lies within walking distance of Canary Wharf’s gleaming towers. What, one wonders, is the current danger – kids back from summer hols or home games at nearby West Ham?

Fortunately the NHS contract has gone to a separate division – DHL Logistics. Let’s hope it can pluck up courage to bring supplies to hospitals and GP surgeries in the ‘hood.

DHL Malaysia gains from diversified client base

DHL Malaysia expects double-digit growth in sales for this year and 2007, driven by growing demand from companies of all sizes to export packages. “We did not consciously work for a diversified portfolio but our customers cut across so many segments that we ended up with it. What this means for DHL is that when the economy goes down one way, another part will go up, so we are able to balance our portfolio,” newly appointed DHL Malaysia country manager Sam Leong told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Leong has been working for DHL for more than 22 years, and was previously DHL Seoul’s country operations director.

He said Malaysia is a key market in Asia Pacific for the DHL network. DHL has a 42 per cent share of the express cargo market here. DHL is available in 60 locations nationwide, including gateways, offices, service centres, terminals and warehouses, and three retail outlets. The retail outlet was set up in response to customer feedback requesting for an outlet in high density areas for convenience. Leong said the venture into retail has been very successful so far, and the company will look for other areas where similar retail outlets can be set up. “We are doing a lot of studies to pin point the right location,” he added.
