Deutsche Post struggles in United States

Deutsche Post AG may deliver packages in more than 200 countries and territories, but it doesn’t look likely to deliver for investors soon. That is because the German delivery and logistics giant is stumbling in the market that matters most and where many of its investors reside: the U.S. Even though the Bonn-based company had predicted that its DHL Express USA unit would turn profitable by the fourth quarter of this year, management now says the unit probably will keep posting losses through at least 2007. Deutsche Post, which is losing roughly half a billion dollars a year in the U.S., also said recently that it would stop providing investors with quarterly guidance for its U.S. operations.

French Postal Observatory: 2004

The aim of the Observatory is to provide sector players and the public with major sector indicators (revenues, traffic volumes and number of access points). To provide a sufficiently complete view of the markets in question, the Observatory is not limited to those activities requiring an authorisation (distribution of items of correspondence, including cross-border), but also covers mail preparation, express mail and parcel activities. This is why we also questioned firms which are outside of the scope of application of the authorisations regime, and the federations representing them. This publication presents the results of the initial collection of information covering the activity of firms in France in 2004. It is an initial approach to postal markets.

Deutsche Post shares trading at 20-40 pct discount vs rivals partly on US

Deutsche Post World Net AG chief financial officer Edgar Ernst said the company’s share price is currently trading at a discount of about 20-40 pct compared with its rivals partly because of its problems in the US. In an interview with Boersen-Zeitung, Ernst also said another reason is the overhang in shares of Deutsche Post. He said once the US operations start making positive contributions to group earnings and when the state-owned Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KfW) sells its remaining Deutsche Post shares as part of the government’s privatisation, then the discount would be reduced. ‘(Our discount) is between 20 pct and 40 pct. And that is clearly too much. Our benchmark for that is UPS, Fedex and TNT,’ he said.

India is the prime focus of our global aviation strategy. We may deploy dedicated freighter in this region with high demand growth,” said Callen.

DHL is struggling to deliver in the US

DHL is a wildly successful brand – on the surface, at least: it is the biggest express carrier in both Europe and Asia, with a 40% share in each market. In the US, however, it has a paltry 7% market share. The delivery market there is dominated by UPS and FedEx, which enjoy a combined 78% market share. To most marketers, the strength, scale and incumbent power of UPS and FedEx would make the US just about the least attractive target market imaginable. But two strategic factors peculiar to the global delivery business mean that DHL must succeed there.
