Annual UBS Airfreight Survey Released

The annual UBS Airfreight Survey, questioning over 100 of the transportation purchasing managers of the Forbes Fortune 500 companies has been released.
Surprisingly, some 30% of those surveyed already use DHL in some capacity, and a further 29% indicated they were likely to give incremental business to DHLAirborne upon integration.

The conclusion is that a price war is unlikely before 2005, but U.S. price inflation will come to an end. They do not believe DHL will predatory price to gain market as the focus will be initially on integration.

DHL data center to relocate to Prague

DHL will move its entire U.K.-based data center and other operations from London and Basel, Switzerland, to Prague where its new IT operations headquarters for all of Europe will be built by May 2004.

A source familiar with the negotiations said the new center would be located in Prague 4, in the new development of real estate investor and developer AIG/Lincoln. The project is called The Park and its total area will be 195,000 sqm.

Among the reported tenants are also IBM, BP and GE Capital Bank. DHL made the decision after an extensive review of its options for delivering high-quality, cost-effective IT operations and other services to their business, company representatives said.

DHL to lay off 2,870 US workers in the wake of its Airbourne purchase

The decision to cut costs at the expense of employees is a sign that the German giant is confidently pressing ahead with its strategic plans in the US rather than a sign of weakness. A more effective and organized DHL should be able to animate the US express landscape.

While DHL Express is busy hiring staff at its new US headquarters in Plantation, Florida, it is cutting 2,870 jobs at its pickup and delivery centers across America as part of its consolidation with Airborne. The layoffs represent about 6% of the company’s total US workforce, which is estimated to be around 44,000 employees. Couriers servicing Airborne’s delivery network will now handle DHL’s pickup and delivery services.

DHL sets aside USD54m for India expansion

DHL has earmarked USD54m for spending on infrastructure and opening gateways in major Indian airports and ports from next month.

DHL Worldwide’s country manager in India, Chris Callen, said the company will set up its headquarters in New Delhi early next month and then open gateways to Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai.
