DHL to use Taiwan experience to tap mainland Chinese market

The international express delivery company DHL will use its Taiwan experience to tap into the mainland Chinese market, a ranking DHL official said Friday.
John P. Mullen, president of the DHL Asia-Pacific regional business, made the remarks while meeting with the Republic of China Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Ling-san.Mullen said that DHL had invested US$300 million to strengthen its infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region in the past several years. Of this amount, US$30 million was injected into Taiwan.

Air Hong Kong link-up awaits franchise nod

Cathay Pacific Airways and DHL Worldwide Express are moving quickly to transform Air Hong Kong into a co-operative venture as they await the go-ahead from the Airport Authority on franchise rights for a new express cargo terminal.
The two companies, which signed a memorandum of understanding in January to jointly operate a mid-range freighter fleet for the intra-Asian trade routes, have already begun securing aircraft, according to sources.
A formal unveiling of the venture was not expected until early autumn, possibly in October.
The venture now hinges on the successful awarding of the new express terminal franchise to DHL, which will then use Chek Lap Kok as its main regional hub.

Irish parcels polarised

Research done into the Irish parcels and packet markets for 2002 has shown a highly polarised market, where 86% of international shipments are handled by the top 7 carriers. The findings are reported for the 1st quarter of 2002 on the basis of 375 telephone interviews with Irish shippers. The ‘PacTrac‘ survey, conducted by Andrew Lester & Associates, will monitor the market quarter by quarter throughout the year.

DHL launches express service from China

Traders in the country will now find it convenient to trade with one of the fastest-growing economies in the world through a new service of DHL world-wide Express.
DHL’s China First program picks up shipments from suppliers in China and delivers them directly to the importer anywhere in the world, said incoming country manager Mike Fitzpatrick.
China’s total import and export volume last year exceeded $400 billion. This gives China the seventh highest trade volume throughout the world, he said.

Integrators beat the Russians to the post

According to a survey by Research International, DHL now holds 51% of the Russian domestic express market, followed by TNT on 19% UPS with 10’% and FedEx with 7%. DHL Worldwide and TNT Russia both announced last month that their revenues grew in excess of 30% last year, while UPS recorded “double-digit” growth.
TNT’s increase of 40% was the highest rate of growth among all 200 countries it operates in, according to Harro van Graafeiland, the company’s general manager.
He attributes the growth to a rapidly recovering economy and increased demand from Russian companies for reliable domestic delivery services.
