DHL to use Taiwan experience to tap mainland Chinese market

The international express delivery company DHL will use its Taiwan experience to tap into the mainland Chinese market, a ranking DHL official said Friday.

John P. Mullen, president of the DHL Asia-Pacific regional business, made the remarks while meeting with the Republic of China Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Ling-san.Mullen said that DHL had invested US$300 million to strengthen its infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region in the past several years. Of this amount, US$30 million was injected into Taiwan.

The construction of DHL’s service centers in Kaohsiung City, southern Taiwan, and Taoyuan City, northern Taiwan, are still underway and DHL will continue to try to maintain its leading role in Taiwan’s express delivery industry, he added.

While the mainland Chinese market is becoming important in the world economy, DHL attaches great importance to the Greater China market, which groups Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong, Mullen said.

DHL’s professional knowledge and experience in Taiwan enable it to enter the mainland Chinese market with a strong management lineup, he said, adding that DHL will continue to increase its investment in Taiwan.

Despite a slump in the global economy, DHL’s turnover in Taiwan still registered a one-digit growth last year. Mullen predicted that DHL’s turnover in Taiwan this year would hit two-digit year-on-year growth. He also estimated that DHL’s turnover in mainland China will grow by 40 percent this year.

Founded in 1969, the DHL network links over 120,000 destinations in more than 220 countries and territories. It established a branch company in Taiwan in 1973. At present, DHL’s market share in Taiwan’s international express delivery market is about 40 percent.
