Potential for Hays from Consignias difficulties

Postcomm is increasingly minded to award licences for a range of competitive postal services to those who come up with the most creative ideas and have the best chance to deliver their promises. In the case of a prolonged postal strike, this programme of change might be brought forward. There are three main contenders for a postal licence. They are: Deutsche Post, the former state-owned German postal service, which has stakes in the DHL and Securicor delivery services and has been mentioned as a buyer for Hays; TNT, which has been bought by the Dutch postal service; and Hays itself, the only UK-quoted company with a look-in. Hays already operates an upmarket delivery service for lawyers and accountants, and has made a convincing case that it could run highly competitive deliveries in major cities, including London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Moreover, if the regulator were to slice away one sector of the market, such as direct advertising, then an application from Hays or Deutsche Post, whose shares are now quoted, would find favour.

Slowdown in telecoms gets integrators talking

Integrators are notoriously reluctant to reveal who their customers are, or to talk about slowing business. But the well-publicised worldwide downturn in the telecoms market, one of Finland’s biggest exports, has brought them out of the closet.
Henrik Lindahi, DHL Finland’s commercial manager, says: “There is a decrease in demand in the hi-tech market. Shipments of heavy machinery that support the telecoms industry have more or less disappeared.”
DHL offers a next-day service throughout Europe, a same-day to Germany, the UK and Nordic countries and operates two nightly flights out of Helsinki to Brussels and Cologne. Connections to the other key Finnish markets are through Copenhagen, with a nightly flight stopping at Tampere, in central Finland, and Oulu, the northern city at the heart of Finland’s telecoms industry.

USPS Discounts Global Express Guaranteed Rates Online

DM News has reported that “the U.S. Postal Service is offering rate discounts to customers who buy the Global Express Guaranteed service online. Global Express Guaranteed, the USPS’ premium international shipping service, is an expedited delivery service offered as a result of an alliance with DHL Worldwide Express. It provides date-certain delivery service from designated U.S. ZIP codes to locations in more than 200 countries and territories. It consists of two mail classifications: Global Express Guaranteed Document Service and Global Express Guaranteed Non-Document Service. The USPS is offering the rate discounts to customers who prepare and pay for their shipments online, offering a standard discount for all such transactions and volume-based discounts for customers who ship minimum volumes weekly.”
