FEDMA celebrates ten years

FEDMA celebrated yesterday its 10 year anniversary: 10 years of innovation, continued growth, change and development in the direct and interactive marketing industry.

More than 80 high-level representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, national direct marketing associations and members attended the cocktail event hosted by FEDMA and supported by Reader’s Digest, Swiss Post International and DHL Global Mail to mark this date.

FEDMA, the Federation of European Direct & Interactive Marketing, was created in 1997 as a result of the merger between EDMA (est. 1976) and FEDIM (est. 1992) and is the single voice of the European direct marketing industry.

“FEDMA has become the voice and driving force of European direct marketing in the past ten years. Using its expertise and comprehensive know-how, FEDMA makes a strong contribution to the further development of the growth industry of direct marketing. Global Mail thanks the dedicated FEDMA team for the valuable support and looks forward to many years of continued cooperation,” said Jürgen Höfling, CEO DHL Global Mail.

FEDMA represents the Direct Marketing sector in all its forms. Its objective is to protect and promote the European direct and interactive marketing sector by creating, through representation, self-regulation and information, acceptance of and confidence in direct and interactive marketing within a healthy commercial and legislative environment in which the sector can profitably operate and develop.

Its national members are direct marketing associations (DMAs) representing users, service providers and media/carriers of direct marketing. In addition to its direct Corporate, Corporate Associate and Company Members, FEDMA represents nearly 10,000 companies through its 27 national DMA members.

The direct marketing sector represents an annual expenditure of over 100 billion euro and employs over 2 million people directly, and many more indirectly, within the EU.

FEDMA hosts successful seminar on Direct and Interactive Marketing

For the second year running, FEDMA hosted today its popular one-day seminar on direct and interactive marketing to provide professionals, who carry out direct and interactive marketing campaigns, with practical knowledge on the latest and future developments in Europe.

Today’s seminar attracted a very high calibre of speakers including Susanne Hornikel, the owner of Direct Success, Ayca Aytac, Director General of the Turkish Direct Marketing Association, Peter Gustafsson, the CEO of Expericard AB, Alex Walsh, Head of Postal Affairs and Industry Development at UK DMA, and Servane Grisot, Director International Marketing & Communication at SR Teleperformance.

The seminar speakers were selectively chosen in order to ensure that seminar participants gained useful, practical, and concrete knowledge on the direct marketing industry in Europe and beyond, which they will be able to utilize in their professional work.

The seminar covered topics such as the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of expanding into unknown markets, how to correct the image of the contact centre industry, a market analysis of Turkey, how to respond to the increasing pressures on environmental issues and increase response and improve you company’s approval ratings. Finally, Alastair Tempest, the FEDMA Director General, gave an update on the current trends in the direct and interactive marketing industry

“It is exciting to see how the FEDMA seminars have become so popular and established amongst our members. This is the second year we’re running these seminars and they are highly demanded by both our members and non-members – and every time we come back, it is stronger than the last!” said Alastair Tempest after the seminar.

The success of the seminar was reflected by the enthusiastic response to the event and, like the previous seminar held in February, tickets had sold out in days. FEDMA will continue to host the popular FEDMA seminars in 2008, For more information, please contact Anne Marheim Støren

Integrated digital and direct mail campaigns win consumer vote

Royal Mail’s consumer study to understand the best uses of different advertising methods also revealed nearly seven in ten people believe that direct mail supports online advertising.

And those who prefer to engage with both direct mail and online advertising spend on average GBP 105 a month on goods and services after receiving a combination of the two – GBP 19 more than those who like online ads only and GBP 34 more than those who would choose only direct mail.

The research, carried out by Quadrangle, identified specific circumstances in which it makes sense for companies to use DM and online when communicating with customers:

• More than half of confident web users (55 per cent) prefer to be contacted by a combination of DM and online

• Nearly three times as many web users think direct mail is more personal than online communications and 50 per cent more said it was more professional

• Only 14 per cent of consumers mostly or always click on online advertising

• Whilst 50 per cent of people were found to rarely, if ever, look or interact with online advertising.

The research also revealed compelling arguments for a combination of email and direct mail:

• 84 per cent of people agree that there is a place for both post and email from companies

• 69 per cent feel that email is best used for supporting or clarifying the mail they receive

• Six in ten agreed that they would prefer a company to approach them first by post, than by email

• Over half of respondents (52 per cent) believe that DM gives a better impression of a company than email

• Eight in ten believe that email is best for communicating brief messages

• 66 per cent prefer to receive detailed information by direct mail

• 69 per cent prefer to receive important or sensitive messages by direct mail

• 71 per cent would rather receive vouchers, brochures or catalogues by mail
