Royal Mail price proposals ''could boost direct marketing''

Proposals from Royal Mail to give it greater control over the prices it charges could see greater amounts of direct marketing being delivered, a leading economist has said.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Ian Senior said a bid by Royal Mail to increase domestic postal charges and reduce business post charges could see marketers being able to afford more direct mail shots.

Prices are currently set until 2010, but company´s chief executive Adam Crozier is pushing regulator Postcomm to completely deregulate charges.

“I think it would have an impact on direct marketing because it is all about trying to keep costs down. If the cost goes down by one or two pence per item, then the volume could go up,” Mr Senior told the Telegraph.

“If prices fall, it is possible that the Royal Mail will get a bigger market share of direct marketing, but it doesn´t mean that the volume will go up,” added a spokesperson from the Direct Marketing Association.

Royal Mail claims that falling profits on business post is forcing it to seek changes to current fees, as it says it must both be more competitive in this area and charge more from domestic customers.

The regulated postal service still controls virtually all the mail delivered in Britain.

Royal Mail offers free For Dummies® book on UK direct mail

The Royal Mail is offering free copies of “Direct Mail For Dummies®” which “provides the practical help and techniques you need to make mailshots work for you and your business”.

The 132-page book – it isn’t simply a PDF – includes tips and techniques for direct mail success, and is aimed at those with little or no experience of direct mail.

The title covers planning, execution and management of a successful mailshot. Appropriately for the Royal Mail, “it explains why direct mail is so successful and shows you how it can benefit your company in terms of customer relationships and your bottom line.”

While it is not directed at the charity sector, its content is likely to be just as relevant to charity staff as those at for-profit organisations.

To receive a free copy you simply need to register your contact details with the Royal Mail.

CR-UK to encourage public to join forces

Cancer Research UK (CR-UK) is launching an integrated campaign, including nearly 18 million door drops, to support its ‘Lives Back’ campaign.

A total of 17,848,916 door drops will be sent out as part of the campaign in a series of five deliveries, the biggest of which (7.6 million packs) takes place on 12 February. Postal sector rankings have been used to identify the most responsive sectors and radio spots will contain a ‘Look out for your mailpack’ call to action.

Anthony Newman, direct marketing director at CR-UK, said the ‘Lives Back’ campaign “marks a new direction for the charity’s marketing activity. We hope that it will motivate people to help beat cancer together”.

Cancer Research UK launched in 2002 after the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign with Imperial Cancer Research Fund. It now has more than half a million regular UK donors and in 2005-06 spent GBP 257m on scientific research into the disease.

Marketers to increase online direct spend as mail loses out

Only 14% of UK marketers are planning to increase their spend on direct mail this year, while 90% are planning to increase their spend on online direct marketing, according to new research from Alterian.
The data analysis software company conducts an annual survey of marketing professionals in North America and the UK.
This year’s survey reveals that direct mail is set to be much more popular in North America than the UK: while 50% of US marketers overall plan to increase their spend on the medium, in the UK only 14% of marketers plan to do so.
North American marketers are slightly less keen to increase online spend: overall, 85% of marketers plan to do so compared with 90% in the UK.
In the UK, the majority of marketers do not integrate email with other channels: 64% do not and 36% do. The picture in the US is very similar.
Almost 40% of UK marketers reported difficulty integrating email marketing activity with the customer database.
Only 28% carry out full analysis of email campaigns and 72% apply basis or no analysis.
David Eldridge, chief executive of Alterian, said: “The 2006 survey shows a well-defined shift in spending and activity.”
