Klaus Zumwinkel is "strategist of the year"

The Financial Times Deutschland has named Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Post World Net, as the “strategist of the year.” He was recognized for implementing a ground-breaking and sustainable corporate strategy in the category for companies with annual sales of more than 15 billion euro. The selection was not based on the decision of a jury. Instead, it was determined through the evaluation and weighting of objective data about the Group’s development by the scientists of the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. The award, being presented this year for the third time, was established by the Financial Times Deutschland, the WHU (Vallendar/Koblenz) and the Bain & Company consulting firm.

The decision was based on an analysis of company data for the fiscal years of 2003-2005. Besides the overall performance of the company and chairman, key factors in the ranking were sales growth, employee development, return on equity and total shareholder return less equity costs. Ninety-eight listed German companies with sales of more than ?1 billion and free-floating shares of at least 2 percent were ranked.

Correos awards Afanías the contract for producing its training manuals

At its last meeting, the CORREOS Investment Committee approved AFANÍAS to carry out a contract for the Association to reproduce or colour print the training manuals and documents that the postal services company requires for its training activities each year.

AFANÍAS is a non-profit association with over 40 years experience, driven by the families of people with mental handicaps.

The aim of the corporate social responsibility actions that CORREOS has been implementing for many years is integration. And among the many integration related activities, support of the employment of people with physical and mental handicaps is the most important. For this reason, CORREOS has decided to contract services from Foundations, Special Employment Centres and Occupational Centres that work with these groups, so that their profits can be reinvested in the creation of new positions. AFANÍAS joins the organisations that work with CORREOS as part of its corporate social responsibility programme. Other bodies include the Carmen Pardo-Valcarce Foundation, the Gil Gayarre Foundation, the APAI Foundation and the “OCON Business Centre” Special Employment Centre.

NHS delivery force on strike

Hundreds of NHS workers will stage the biggest strike in the health service for almost 20 years today, in a bitter row over privatisation.
Workers at NHS Logistics, who deliver goods ranging from bedpans to food to hospitals and GP surgeries across England, will walk out at 10pm for 24 hours in protest at being transferred to German-owned delivery giant DHL.
They will stage a second 24 hour stoppage on September 26 to coincide with a debate on the health service at next week’s Labour party conference.
The workers voted last week to take industrial action after the Government confirmed the transfer of their jobs to DHL in a 10-year contract which Unison said was worth GBP3.7 billion.
Karen Jennings, the union’s head of health, said: “Our members have worked hard to build NHS Logistics into an award-winning service and don’t deserve to be treated in this way. There is simply no logical explanation for this transfer.”

Seur invests 10 million in its new Lisbon head office

Seur opened its new facilities yesterday in the Greater Lisbon area, on which it has spent ten million euros. Seur’s managing director for Portugal, Roberto Abarca, told Gaceta that the company aims to end the year with a turnover of €35 million, 16% up on 2005 (€30 million). This figure will make Seur “the second-largest express delivery firm” in Portugal after the state-owned corporation Correos.
With nine offices in Portugal – including one on the island of Madeira – Seur plans to open its first centre on the Azores archipelago in the coming months. Abarca said the Spanish firm’s subsidiary seeks to reinforce its leadership position in Spain-Portugal exchanges and increase the weight of the logistics business, which now accounts for 7% of turnover. The new facilities – at only a few kilometres from the national capital – cover 40,000 square metres, of which 11,000 are given over to storage.
Seur Portugal employs 330 people and operates 189 vehicles. The group, chaired by Manuel Valle, made sales of €574 million in 2005, and targets 8% growth this year.
