UK Royal Mail's GLS to create own express air delivery service

The Royal Mail’s General Logistics Systems is creating its own air express delivery service, Rico Back, the head of GLS, told Handelsblatt.

Back said the company will invest 10 mln eur in GLS Air this year and that its two aircraft will fly between the company’s delivery centres in Germany and the UK from October.

Ultimately, GLS Air wants to have a fleet of 25 aircraft that will fly to 17 European nations, he added. GLS is the continental European counterpart to Royal Mail’s UK-based Parcelforce Worldwide. It is based in the Netherlands and has 14,500 staff.

Business Post delivers improvement

A company handed a licence under the deregulation of the postal service has showed signs of recovery following a profits warning earlier this year.

Business Post warned in January that annual profits for the year to March 31 would be pounds 4.5m lower than expectations because of the cost of buying out the leases to a string of franchised depots.

The company said a number of initiatives had helped stabilise its performance since then, adding that recent trading was satisfactory and in line with market hopes.

Swiss Post International (SPI), the foreign operations unit of Swiss post office services provider Die Post, has acquired online postcard service company MobileImaging GmbH, Die Post said on July 12, 2006.

Through the deal, SPI aims at expanding the range of its online postcard service offers.

Finland Post To Sell Stake in Kelpo Kuljetus JV to German DHL

Finland Post Group said on July 12, 2006 it will sell its 49 pct stake in the transport joint venture Kelpo Kuljetus Fi Oy to joint venture partner DHL, the logistics and express delivery business of German postal service group Deutsche Post.

No financial details were available.

The transaction is subject to approval by the competition authorities.

The deal is part of the partners’ aim to focus on their core businesses.
