Postcomm reveals plan to smash competition barriers

Small businesses are being urged to scrutinise how much money they spend on direct mail postage – and hunt down better deals – as part of Postcomm’s plans to tear down the barriers to competition in the privatised postal market. The call comes as the regulator publishes a decision document setting out its recommendations on tackling the obstacles that were identified in its Competitive Market Review, published in November 2005. The 54-page paper includes a wide range of recommendations. Although, as the independent regulator, it cannot recommend one postal operator over another, it admits that low awareness remains a major barrier. A Postcomm spokeswoman says: “Not many smaller companies realise that the threshold for mailings to be handled by private operators has come down from 3,000 items to 250. We urge these businesses to get in touch with all postal operators, including Royal Mail, to see what deals are out there.

Employee proposals save Deutsche Post 270m euros

Deutsche Post is reported in a survey on ideas management to have saved 270m euros last year by following advice gleaned from employees, representing savings of almost 1,500 euros per employee. In this respect, the company has therefore overtaken technologies group Siemens, which saved 249m euros last year by following employee suggestions.

Firm wins GBPm deal to provide utility bills

A firm has won a contract worth GBP500,000 to print customer accounts for an energy giant. Otm, based on Braunstone Frith Industrial Estate has signed a deal with a division of energy firm npower called Yorkshire Electricity and Northern Electricity (YENE). The agreement will see OTM print 70,000 electricity and gas bills a day and post them to all YENE consumers. Kris Prashad, managing director, say the partnership could help win further new contracts with major blue chip clients. He said: “We won the contract following a tender and we are pleased we got it. “Winning this deal will give us confidence and, hopefully, in the next 12 months people will see that our customer base has increased.”

Poste Italiane could be set to deliver banking services

The CEO of Italian post office Poste Italiane, Massimo Sarmi, has revealed that his organisation is considering applying for a banking licence. It could do so in July, when it presents its latest strategic plan, but Mr Sarmi stressed that the company did not currently possess the skills required to operate as a bank.
Mr Sarmi was speaking as Poste Italiane presented its results for 2005. They showed a 13.6 per cent increase in turnover, to 16bn euros, and a 19.4 per cent climb in net profits, to 349m euros.

Dutch TNT considers new cost-saving programme

TNT is condidering a new cost-saving programme, company CEO Peter Bakker told the annual shareholders meeting on April 20, 2006. TNT has been restructuring its 2001 Masterplan Costs Flexibility programme since 2003, which has led to cost-savings of about 234 mln euro (USD288.3 mln). Though the company’s total cost savings are estimated to stand at 370 mln euro (UD455.8 mln) by 2013, TNT aims to implement a new programme that will further its savings.
