UK Post Office strangling branches

Thousands of post offices face the axe because of red tape that subpostmasters say will ruin their businesses. They believe that the Post Office’s archaic curbs on how they work are stifling opportunities to thrive. But their efforts to overturn what they see as unfair terms in their contracts with the Post Office have been rebuffed. The Association of Convenience Stores, which has 10,000 post office members, lodged a complaint with the Office of Fair Trading last December over the contracts between the Post Office and subpostmasters. The association, backed by the Postmasternetwork website, claims that the contract is anti-competitive because it prevents sub-postmasters who run their own businesses from operating on equal terms with other retail outlets. But after a ten-month review, the OFT says it is closing its file unless the association can supply new evidence within the next few weeks.

Post of Slovenia in line with new standards, its GM says

Post of Slovenia has in recent years successfully aligned its services with market demand and European standards, its general manager Ales Hauc told STA on Sunday, 10 October, marking the World Post Day. According to Hauc, the Maribor-based company is introducing new, up-to-date services, which have seen a rise of 127% in the past ten years. The company is focusing on quality, new financial and e-services, and traditional post services, he added. Slovenia’s EU entry was expected to bring increased competition and different business conditions, Hauc said, pointing to the introduction of new services such as parcels delivery and express post. However, only new technologies can make the company competitive and ensure it good business results.

Poczta Polska to merge with PKO BP?

The country’s largest retail bank, PKO BP, and Poczta Polska(PP) national postal service may soon become one company, if Law and Justice (PiS)’s plans are implemented, writes Rzeczpospolita daily. According to the newspaper, some PiS representatives have already discussed the possibility of a merger with PP managers. “We cannot comment on these proposals, but PKO BP is our natural partner so we will certainly co-operate more closely,” said Marcin Anaszewicz, spokesman for the PP.

DHL invests in European logistics network

Peter E. Kruse, Member of the Corporate Board at Deutsche Post World Net with responsibility for DHL Express Europe and Germany, inaugurated a new state-of-the-art DHL terminal in Breslau yesterday. The terminal is intended to strengthen the European DHL logistics network. It is one of five new terminals to be opened in Poland in 2005. Costs for the new warehouse and sorting center amount to 3.3 million euros. The opening of the Breslau terminal and other facilities in the near future forms part of DHL Express’ consistent growth strategy in Europe. The terminal has a transshipment capacity of up to 15,000 items per day.

TNT Portugal sees 2005 turnover up 12 Pct Y/Y

TNT Portugal projects to generate a turnover of 39 mln euro (USD47.5 mln) for full 2005, up 12 pct year-on-year, it was reported on October 3, 2005. In comparison, the company’s turnover totalled 34.5 mln euro (USD42 mln) in 2004.
TNT Portugal projects also to process some 60,000 tonnes of parcels in 2005. Letters processed by the company are estimated to round 2.6 million at the end of 2005, compared to 2.3 million in 2004. The number of the company’s clients is expected to increase by some 15 pct compared to 2004, when they totalled 11,042.
