TNT signs contract for two more Boeing 737 aircraft

TNT Express today announced that it has signed a contract with GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) for two additional B737-300SF aircraft. With a payload of 16 tonnes, the aircraft will be introduced to the company’s highly successful European Air Network in August and December 2006 respectively and will replace sub-contracted aircraft. The introduction of the new aircraft will provide the company with increased capacity and will bring the total number of 737’s in the TNT fleet to nine.

Amtrak doubles up

Amtrak Express Parcels has started a two-man home delivery service for retailers, specialising in items such as plasma and LCD TVs, and other electrical goods.
Amtrak is the first express parcel carrier to offer the capability, eliminating the need for dedicated in-house or contractor fleets.

Irish ComReg launches its Strategy Statement for 2005/2007

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) today issued its second strategy statement outlining ComReg’s views on possible developments in the telecommunications and postal sectors for 2005 to 2007. ComReg is legally obliged to publish a strategy statement every two years setting out its regulatory strategy in order to meet its objectives and functions as set out in the 2002 Communications Regulation Act.

Lockheed Martin selected to upgrade Sweden’s mail processing

Posten Sverige AB, Sweden’s national postal service, has selected Lockheed Martin to upgrade its address recognition technology and mail automation capabilities for processing the nation’s letter mail. The upgraded programme will create a common recognition platform to consolidate automated sorting systems at Swedish national processing centers. In addition, it will improve the recognition technology used to process and deliver letter mail. Lockheed Martin will also integrate more than 70 legacy sorting machines to further streamline and improve automated letter sorting capabilities across the country. This new system is similar to the highly efficient Lockheed Martin-developed address interpretation system now in place at the United Kingdom’s Royal Mail.

Italy Poste Italiane revenue up 6.5 pct Y/Y H1 2005

Italy’s state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane ended the first half of 2005 with a consolidated revenue of 4.8 bln euro (USD5.737 bln), up 6.5 pct year-on-year, the company said on October 3, 2005. Consolidated operating profit stood at 412 mln euro (USD492.5 mln) and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased 18.3 pct. The company’s investments amounted to over 200 mln euro (USD239.1 mln). Poste Italiane expects to post a turnover of 9.0 bln euro (USD10.758 bln) for 2005.
