The Portuguese postal regulator, ICP, is opening up the postal sector to competition. “Postlog and Postexpresso are the first specialized Portuguese companies in urgent mail to be granted the titles by the National Regulatory Authority (Instituto de Comunicações de Portugal – ICP) to render postal services on a competitive basis. This fact by itself symbolizes and confirms CTT group as leader of the market.

US finance group possible bidder for Railtrack

Babcock & Brown, the US finance group, has emerged as a possible bidder for all or part of Railtrack, the privatised UK rail network operator. The group has been considering financing packages for Railtrack for months.

The proposals, which considered ways that areas of Railtrack could be financed more cost-effectively, had not reached formal discussions when Railtrack was put into administration three weeks ago.

EasyJet profits rise 82% as share issue planned

EasyJet, the UK-based low-cost airline, reported a sharp rise in full-year profits on Monday and announced plans for a share issue to fund its expansion.

The company said pre-tax profits for the 12 months to the end of September jumped 82 per cent to £40.1m ($57m), from £22.1m last year and said it was well positioned to take advantage of the crisis facing most of its full-service rivals.

Via its subsidiary Hultberg Inrikes Transporter (HIT), Posten has purchased the Dutch carriers Starintex Road Cargo and Gendringen Expedite. The companies operate within forwarding and in-night transportation in the Netherland, Belgium and Germany.

market up and intercity connections in 2003. In 2004 the fixed telephony
market will be completely open. Regarding public operators, the Post Office
and Algerie Telecom, we are preparing for competition. Internationally, in
November 2001 the underwater Algiers-Palma cable will be ready. We already
have an underwater Algiers-Marseille cable.
