Correos – Post office electronically tags letters, parcels

The post office is electronically tagging some letters and parcels to make sure they get to their intended recipients.

In the first scheme of its kind in Europe, Correos has begun to electronically tag the mail to cut costs and improve efficiency.

The system, which is being used in a pioneering project involving 10,000 letters a month, involves tagging mail with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to allow it to be tracked electronically.

The Spanish daily El Pais reported on Wednesday the system may be expanded.

Correos has spent one million euros installing 1,900 antennas and 330 tag readers at 16 automated mail sorting centres around the country

It plans to use the system mainly with parcel services.

In an effort to dispel concerns of a Big Brother-type scheme, Correos says no personal information about the sender or the recipient is exchanged.

Post Denmark records 2006 before tax profit of DKK 1,187 million

In 2006, Post Danmark recorded a profit before tax of DKK 1,187 million. This is an improvement of DKK 154 million compared with 2005. The profit after tax was DKK 892 million against DKK 738 million the year before.

This is the best result ever achieved by Post Danmark. Helge Israelsen, CEO of Post Denmark, stated that their involvement in the Belgian De Post – La Poste was a major reason for the improvement.

In 2006, Post Danmark’s income totalled DKK 11,718 million against DKK 11,462 million in 2005. The volume of letters continued to drop in 2006, while revenue from letters was at the prior-year level thanks to the price increases at the beginning of the year. Revenue rose for parcels, magazine mail, newspapers, magazines and periodicals as well as unaddressed mail.

As part of its continued development, the company most recently acquired 51 per cent of the shares in Transportgruppen A/S. The deal was made at the beginning of 2007.

As a result of the continued decline in the volume of letters, Post Danmark expects profit before tax for the full year of 2007 overall to be somewhat lower than in 2006.

GeoPost raises stake in Seur to 19.6%

La Poste’s international express subsidiary GeoPost has raised its stake in Spain’s Seur group through their joint venture, Seur-GeoPost, buying Seur’s Santander franchise.

The acquisition of Seur Santander, which turned over EUR 7 million last year and employs 83 staff, is the seventh franchise bought by Seur-GeoPost, the company 60% owned by GeoPost. According to Seur, quoted in the El País newspaper, the joint venture’s purchase of the Santander operation consolidated the alliance between the two groups and represented a reinforcement of the development of Seur in the Cantabrian region of Spain.

Seur, with turnover of EUR 574 million in 2005, is one of the leading express companies in Spain, where the market is growing at about 8% a year and is currently worth some EUR 6.6 billion in revenues.

UK High Court rejects Royal Mail's appeal against Postcomm

The High Court has upheld the GBP 9.62 million financial penalty Postcomm levied on Royal Mail for failing to protect adequately the mail in its care, following an appeal of the penalty by Royal Mail. The judgment reinforces Postcomm’s position that the fine is proportionate and reflective of the loss suffered by customers.
Royal Mail did not dispute Postcomm’s finding that it breached its licence requirements to keep mail safe and secure, nor that this breach was serious; it appealed only against the level of the financial penalty.
On 24 August 2006, Postcomm imposed a financial penalty of GBP 9.62 million on Royal Mail for breaching its licence by failing to properly protect the mail in its care. The penalty followed a review of Royal Mail’s mail integrity procedures, during which Postcomm found that some important features of Royal Mail’s procedures were not being applied across the business.
The most significant weakness found was the poor management of the recruitment and training process for non-contract (agency) staff. In addition, the framework and information systems that Royal Mail had put in place to prevent the loss, theft or damage of mail were not operating effectively. These weaknesses significantly reduced the company’s ability to protect customers’ mail.

The chips are embedded in the RFID stickers placed on the items, and a trial of the system has shown that 10,000 packets were identified correctly.

The company has invested one million euros in the project, and now it will be used firstly in the company’s messenger service, before being extended to other items.

Correos currently handles 5 billion items a year and delivers post to 19 million addresses a day.
