Fed ex-chairman supports investment in France

On his departure from Davos, Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president and CEO of FedEx Corp. accepted an invitation by French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to participate in the Strategic Council on France Attractiveness.

Mr. Smith shared his views with French government officials on how France can become even more attractive in the global marketplace. Recognizing the advantages of the French market offers, in 1999 FedEx Express chose France to be the site of FedEx Express European hub, located at Roissy Charles de Gaulle. Together with Aéroports de Paris, 220 million euros were invested in the hub, which has made Roissy Charles de Gaulle the largest cargo platform in Europe. About 1,000 tons of freight move through the hub every day.

As a founding member of the Roissy Carex Group, FedEx is working with the government and other partners to establish an integrated transport policy in Europe and to raise the attractiveness of CDG as a European intermodal hub. Mr. Smith stated, “One of the key remaining issues for France is to develop an integrated regional transport infrastructure using high-speed trains to deliver air cargo throughout Europe. This would greatly benefit the local economy and the environment.”

France's TAT Express becomes Tatex

French B2B parcels carrier TAT Express has rebranded to become known simply by its previous standard abbreviation Tatex and is changing its logo and identity to reflect new company values – closer relationships with clients and a small and medium-sized enterprise “spirit”.

Tatex, which transports 19 million parcels a year and has an annual turnover of over EUR 150 million, was formed in 1976 by the TAT air company and has 1,300 staff, 800 vehicles, 34 branches, five regional transit centres and a national hub in southern Paris of 14,500 sqm.

La Poste subsidiary GeoPost sold the majority of TAT Express to XAAP Finances in 2005. The rebranding to Tatex will take place this year.

One of the first steps by Tatex has been to extend by one hour the cut-off time for deliveries, from 12.00 to 13.00, which came into effect on 1 January. The company’s web site is being modified to bring its product portfolio and timetables up to date.

Slow growth for French CEP market

The French domestic express and parcels market is growing only moderately with e-commerce as the main growth driver, according to a report from the French postal regulator ARCEP. The liberalised mail sector is growing faster than the large monopoly sector, it also revealed.

The ARCEP annual report, based on a number of market surveys and external sources, provided figures for 2005 in comparison to 2004.

The French domestic express segment, covering light parcels up to 30kg, grew by 4.7% to revenues of EUR 1.4 billion and just under 200 million items in 2005, the report stated. Referring to other previous surveys, ARCEP said that the total French express market segment, including international shipments, had a value of EUR 3 billion in 2004.

In the parcels segment, covering single items weighing up to 30 kg, the domestic market grew by 2.6% to revenues of EUR 1.43 billion in 2005 while volumes rose by 2.8% to 355 million items, ARCEP said. The B2C segment was the largest part of the parcel market, but C2C volumes were likely to grow as consumers sold more goods through e-commerce websites, it noted. Parcel shipping generated by online orders grew by 40% between December 2004 and December 2005, the regulator said.

Are smaller stamps going to save the planet?

France’s La Poste proudly announces what they consider a major step in environmental friendliness: the “Eco-carnet“.

Up to now, a carnet contained 10 stamps; the new version contains 12 stamps of a smaller size, using the same amount of paper.

La Poste claims a saving of 13% on paper, which is the equivalent of 192 trees per year.

That means that by the time La Poste has saved 192 trees, they have delivered 1.8 billion letters across the country.

Most French post travels by train or aeroplane between major regional distribution centers, from where it travels by lorry to local post offices, before it is delivered by your friendly postman on his moped (in cities) or mini-van (in country towns).
