France will respond 'clearly' to EU investigation of tax-free savings accounts

Finance Minister Thierry Breton said the government will respond ‘clearly’ to the EU Commission’s investigation into the restricted distribution of Livret A and Livret Bleu savings accounts, though it has not yet received any elements of the infringement proceedings. ‘Of course, we are ready to respond clearly,’ Breton told journalists. Earlier today, the Commission said it will contest the granting of exclusive distribution rights of Livret A savings accounts to state-owned La Poste and mutual bank Caisse d’Epargne.

TOOLES Transport, based in Droitwich, has launched a new express delivery service for small consignments of goods to mainland Europe.

As a member of the Palletways distribution network, which has more than 100 depots in the UK, the company will now be able to distribute small consignments more cost effectively and faster than before to a vast European marketplace, inclu-ding Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemborg, Denmark, France and Germany.

UPS expands French retail network through Office Depots

UPS has enlarged its retail network in France through a cooperation agreement with Office Depot, an office furniture and equipment chain. The new outlets are primarily targeted at small businesses with irregular parcel volumes. In a customer message posted on its website, UPS France said that it now offered delivery services through a total of 42 Office Depot stores in major cities across France. Parcels processed through the retail chain would be delivered to addresses in France and the EU within 24 hours, and within two days to most international destinations.

GeoPost Boosted by Takeovers

Parcels Group GeoPost, a subsidiary of La Poste, recorded a turnover of Î2.53bn in 2005, an increase of 6.2%. Pre-tax profit was up to Î142.9m.
Growth was boosted by an increase in volumes handled in most European domestic markets, particularly in Germany, the UK and eastern Europe, and an increase in international business.
