Record growth for DPD Masterlink in 2006

In 2006 Masterlink registered a record growth of volumes – 12,2 million parcels delivered. This figure represents an approximate 50% rise in comparison with 2005. This increase is also reflected in the growth of turnover by 40%.

Since the beginning of 2006 investments began in operational and IT infrastructure of DPD Masterlink. This resulted in the establishment of a second depot in Warsaw, enlargement of the company’s headquarters by further warehouse and office areas and expansion of the Katowice depot area and the modernization of other existing branches in the country. Simultaneously, the company invested in necessary warehouse equipment, conveyor belts and IT systems.
For the second year in a row the company registered growth three times bigger than the market, without jeopardising its commitment to maintaining a high quality of service. The future plans will see continued growth with further investments in the infrastructure. Rafal Nawloka, DPD Masterlink President, predicts that the finalization of the first phase of investments in operational infrastructure will occur in 2010.
The change of the legal name of the company is the last step in the transition phase of the two brands coexistence. Thanks to this change Masterlink will be able to build a new international image, as well as compete more effectively on the market and increase its share in the international parcels segment.

Bulgaria and Romania – DPD Masterlink opened new road connections from Poland

In order to satisfy new market demands, DPD Masterlink opened daily road connections to Bulgaria and Romania. DPD Masterlinks customers as well as clients of partner subsidiaries belonging to the GeoPost Group, show great interest in sending parcels to these countries. The free circulation of goods within the European Union has resulted in the creation of a new international road transportation market for parcel delivery.

This market did not exist before, because of the prohibitive costs of customs clearance. The cost was the same for a single parcel and a whole grouping of parcels. Import and export volumes will fully benefit from the disappearance of customs barriers. It is predicted, similarly to when Poland joined the European Union, that volumes from Bulgaria and Romania will rise to 4 times the amount within the very first year of EU membership.

The new transport network set up by DPD gives our clients additional proof of our commitment to following them in emerging markets but also towards destinations beyond the European Community area, farther afield towards Central and Eastern Europe. We are once again showing our willingness to increase our quality of service to these countries by our capacity for adapting our organisation, explains Paul-Marie Chavanne, CEO of GeoPost.

Romanian courier services provider Cargus said its gross profit fell to 2.1 mln euro (USD2.73 mln) in 2006 from 2.5 mln euro (USD3.25 mln) reported in 2005.
Cargus’s 2006 turnover dropped below the value of 15.3 mln euro (USD19.9 mln) registered in 2005, due to higher investment last year, the company’s CEO Augustin Plesea said.

In 2007, Cargus expects its turnover to rise 45 pct on the year to 29 mln euro (USD37.73 mln).

British CEP market consolidates further

The fragmented British courier, express and parcels market looks set for a new wave of consolidation following this week’s GBP 210 million acquisition of independent parcels carrier Target Express by Rentokil Initial, parent holding of leading player City Link. The deal makes City Link into a top competitor to DHL, TNT and UPS in the domestic next-day parcels market.

Growth in Europe’s second-largest express and parcels market has slowed over the last year, especially in the domestic sector. The market is forecast to grow only moderately at about 3% over the next few years. At the same time, the traditionally fierce price-based competition in Britain and higher operating costs, especially fuel costs, have combined to put pressure on profit margins. These factors have hit smaller, domestically-focused companies in particular, and opened up new opportunities for mergers and acquisitions.

There have already been several important transactions in the UK in recent years. UPS improved its domestic market position with the acquisition of Lynx Express last year, while Amtrak Express Parcels broadened its portfolio through the takeover of Nightspeed. DHL had earlier jumped to become market leader with the acquisition of the Securicor Omega Express business, while GeoPost had acquired Parceline and Interlink Express.
