German chancellor Merkel rejects minimum wage for postal employees this year

German chancellor Angela Merkel told newspaper Handelsblatt she has rejected a move by her Social Democratic (SPD) coalition partners to create a minimum wage for employees in the postal sector this year.

However, she said companies in the sector could request to have their industry included in the minimum wage codex by March next year.

‘Inclusion in the wage codex assumes that various competitors can agree amongst themselves,’ she added

But the newspaper added that an intra-industry agreement was unlikely, because several competitors pay considerably lower wages than the former state monopoly, Deustche Post AG.

The SPD wants to create a minimum wage for the industry’s workers, whose wages it maintains are under threat from foreign competitors active in Germany.

DHL poised to review GBP 25 m pan-European ad account

DHL is understood to be reviewing its pan-European advertising account. It is understood that the pitch, which is being run out of Germany, is still in early stages.

Ogilvy Stockholm is the lead agency on the account although Ogilvy Primary Contact, Ogilvy’s business-to-business division in the UK, handles some work. It is thought that the review is being handled by AAR Gmbh in Germany.

Lisa Morgan, director for marketing communications at DHL Express Europe, denies there is any review. She adds: “I do work with Ogilvy Sweden for pan-European campaigns and am not reviewing our account. Our corporate branding and advertising department is based in Bonn. They are responsible for all global brand communications for DHL and are in touch with many agencies/companies in this respect.”

An Ogilvy spokesman says the agency is unaware of any account review.

Last year, DHL appointed Harrison Troughton Wunderman (HTW) to handle direct marketing in the UK without a pitch, while Vizeum handles media. It is not thought that they will be affected by the review.

Germany's Sparkassen in talks with Pin Group for possible in-branch mail service

Germany’s Sparkassen savings banks are currently in talks with Luxembourg-based carrier service Pin AG over a possible cooperation which may include offering postal services at Sparkassen branches, reported Spiegel magazine, citing a spokesman for the DSGV, the German savings bank association.

At this point it is still open as to what form the agreement could take, but the report speculated that the DSGV might be looking into offering a service to compete against rival Deutsche Postbank AG and its parent company Deutsche Post AG, which offers customers postal services at its branches.

The report said it was also not clear whether Sparkasse or Pin AG employees would operate such a service.

Earlier this week, German media house Axel Springer AG bought a controlling share in Pin AG, raising its holding in the mail service provider to 71.6 pct from 23.5 pct.

Pin AG chief executive Guenter Thiel has said that his company plans to have a branch network as large as that of Deutsche Post’s by mid-2008.

The company handles about 2.3 mln mailings a day and expects to more than double its annual sales this year to 350 mln eur.
