Official opening of the new South Runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport

After a construction period of just two years, Leipzig/Halle Airport’s 3,600 metre South Runway is being officially opened today in the presence of about 600 representatives of politics, industry and the media. The Central German airport now has a parallel runway system suitable for intercontinental traffic

With the opening of the South Runway, Leipzig/Halle Airport will have two parallel 3,600 metre runways that can service all aircraft types including the Airbus A380 with no payload or range restrictions. The two runways have a separation distance of 2,120 metres, enabling them to be used independently. Like the North Runway, the South Runway has a Category IIIb All-Weather Landing System for both approach directions.
Adjoining the South Runway is a 53 hectare apron for cargo aircraft, which was also part of the expansion project and which will be used by Deutsche Post World Net express subsidiary DHL from this autumn.

The airport shareholders have invested approximately EUR 290 million in the new South Runway, including taxiways.

Another EUR 60 million has been spent on compliance, including extensive noise and environmental protection measures and land acquisition

TNT Express wins Bosch Supplier Award

TNT Express has won the Bosch Supplier Award in the “Logistic Service Provider” category for the second time in a row. Bosch awarded the prize to TNT for its performance regarding quality of service, reliability and pricing. Other criteria were communication, cooperation and readiness for continuous improvement. The globally operating Bosch Group’s prize was awarded to the whole TNT Express division.

TNT had already won the supplier prize, which is awarded every two years, in 2005. Now, Bosch is rewarding the express service provider for its cooperation during the past two years.

John Willems, Global Account Director TNT Express and Dieter Schwaderer, Senior General Manager Coordination & Projects TNT Express Germany, accepted the prize during a function at the State Gallery in Stuttgart on 4th July 2007.

TNT Express’s uncompromising focus on its customers’ needs and requirements has been impartially certified before: at the beginning of 2007, TNT Express won the European Business Award in the ‘Customer Focus’ category. The renowned prize is supported by a number of well-known organisations from all over Europe – including the Wall Street Journal Europe, Siemens, Grey EMEA, Société Générale, AXA and CMS, an alliance of major European law firms. TNT Express was named ‘most customer focused business in Europe’ because, according to the jury, it ‘sets an example in focusing on the customer as the centre of its business activities and on making exceptionally efficient use of resources in order to fulfil its customers’ needs.’

Bosch is awarding the prize that is offered to suppliers across the globe, for the eleventh time since 1987. The prize is awarded every two years. This year, it was awarded in five categories to a total of 47 companies from 14 countries.

German start-up Red Parcel Post invests EUR 130m in first sorting centre

Red Parcel Post, the start-up German B2B parcels carrier, will invest about EUR 130 million in the first of its four planned logistics centres. The company’s operational launch has been repeatedly postponed and is now scheduled for the first half of 2008.

The 60,000 sqm parcel sorting centre will be built in Stegelitz/Burg between Magdeburg and Leipzig, in Saxony-Anhalt, eastern Germany, the federal state’s economics ministry announced. The site will also be the parcel company’s head office, creating about 260 new jobs. It is due to go into operation during the first half of 2008.

Saxony-Anhalt is providing a subsidy for the investment that media reports put at about €20 million. RPP will have a fleet of about 700-800 delivery vans for regional distribution.

Red Parcel Post (RPP) owner Walter Hellmich, head of the Hellmich construction company, said the parcels company planned to handle 35 million parcels a year initially.

It plans to create a high-tech parcel sorting and distribution network based on four regional centres (Magdeburg, Duisburg, Hamburg and Frankfurt) and using RFID/satellite technology for parcel tracking and tracing. The technology is being developed in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer research institute in Magdeburg.

Sigma shareholders need good lie down

Sigma, which had the worst performing share price of any of the ASX’s top 100 companies, last year, had forecast 10 to 15 per cent growth on last financial year’s USD 101 million net profit.

But in a statement yesterday Sigma wiped out the forecast growth, indicating that the coming year’s profit would remain at about USD 101 million.

It attributed the profit downgrade to diluted access to a government funding scheme and heightened competition in the generic pharmaceutical market.

Sigma managing director Elmo de Alwis said Sigma’s competitor, global freight company DHL, should not be able to access the Federal Government’s community service obligation fund, which is worth USD 12 million a month.

The CSO funds pharmacy distributors to ensure all pharmacies across the nation are adequately stocked. Mr de Alwis said he had received legal advice that DHL should not be allowed access to the scheme because it only distributed for the generic drug manufacturer Alphapharm.

If DHL was taken off the scheme it would boost the USD 4 million monthly payment Sigma received from the pool. But analysts said Mr de Alwis had been overly optimistic in including a revision to the CSO scheme in Sigma’s original profit forecast.

Increased discounting by generic drugs companies and the expiry of Sigma’s sole licence to produce some generic products would also hurt the company’s future earnings, Sigma said.
