SingPost to offer Visa Money Transfer

Visa Money Transfer service allows customers to transfer funds directly to Visa cards in nine markets around the world

Visa and Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) will offer the Visa Money Transfer remittance service from 51 designated post offices in Singapore enabling the transfer of money to nine markets around the world.

The SingPost Visa Money Transfer service is convenient, secure and inexpensive and enables money to be sent to Visa cardholders in nine countries in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United Kingdom. It is the first time Visa Money Transfer has been made available through a postal service provider.

All the customers need to do is to register for a CASHOME card at any of the 51 SingPost post offices offering Visa Money Transfer. A CASHOME card is an identification card for customers to use to remit funds, removing the hassle of filling out forms each time they wish to transfer funds. Whenever customers wish to remit money, they simply provide the recipient’s 16-digit Visa card number to whom they wish to send the funds.

For subsequent money transfers, customers need only present their CASHOME card to the SingPost staff and advise which pre-registered recipient they wish to send the money to. The money transfer will be processed through Visa’s international network and the funds credited to the recipient’s Visa account, who can then use his or her Visa card at any Visa merchant or Visa/PLUS ATM.

The SingPost Visa Money Transfer service maintains cardholder security during the transaction as customer information and account numbers are encrypted throughout the process.

Senders can remit a maximum of SGD 3,500 per day. The exchange rate used will be the prevailing rate quoted to the customer at the point of transaction. A flat fee of SGD 9.00 per transaction applies.

Zumwinkel to quit his roles at Deutsche (Germany)

Klaus Zumwinkel is to retire as Chairman of Deutsche Telekom and Chief Executive of Deutsche Post, ending the tenure of a man long backed by the German government but criticised by other shareholders in the companies.

People close to Mr Zumwinkel said, given that he turned 65 in December, the moves were “inevitable”. But government officials said Berlin had become wary of backing him for positions other than as chairman of Post, an appointment he will take up.

Last year he fought for a minimum wage for postal workers, a move that saw rivals ditch plans for letter services – and gave the Social Democrats in the left-right coalition government a cause to champion.

However, an outcry ensued in December when he took advantage of the ensuing spike in the Post stock price to sell shares in the company.

This added to pressure at Telekom, which ousted top executives after rising client defections in 2006. Blackstone, the private equity group which holds 5 per cent in the telecoms group, lobbied for Mr Zumwinkel’s departure.

The US investor, along with other Anglo-American investors, said Mr Zumwinkel was too busy sorting out problems after Post’s unhappy foray into the US to devote enough attention to a troubled Telekom.

The German government owns about a third of each company’s stock, giving it the most powerful voice on both supervisory boards. The finance ministry, Telekom and Post declined to comment.

Mr Zumwinkel has yet to declare his intentions publicly. For a while he even kept key investors guessing, a delay that might have made succession trickier at both companies.

DHL adopts 7-day rota to reduce delays (Kenya)

DHL Express Kenya has introduced weekend consignment deliveries to minimise delays.

The service will also see the company pick up and deliver shipments during public holidays.

DHL Express Country Services Manager, Rogers Sultani, said the service would cater for customers with urgent shipping needs.

“The service is in tandem with recent growth trends that prompted companies to serve their clients efficiently and on time,” said Mr Sultani.
Introduction of the service is also being seen as responding to the growing sophistication in customer needs.

The service will initially be available in Nairobi and later to be rolled out to other major towns. It will initially attract no additional costs to customers.

Mr Sultani told Business Daily the service is expected to take some pressure off the weekday deliveries. Previously, the international express industry in Kenya has been offering pickup and delivery services from Monday to Friday, with limited deliveries on Saturdays and none on Sundays.

The weekend service is expected to particularly benefit customers in the health, hospitality, architectural and academic sectors.

In addition, against the back drop of the introduction of the 24-hour clearance at the DHL Express Gateway facility at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a year ago, the Weekend Express Delivery.

GLS to offers real-time tracking in Germany and Austria

GLS is now enabling its customers to track their parcels in real-time in Germany and Austria. The service is planned to be rolled out at other European subsidiaries in the next phase.

The parcels company said it has equipped its delivery staff with bluebooth-enabled mobile phones for data exchange with their hand-held scanners. On delivery GLS collects the digital signature and scans the individual parcel ID.

The delivery confirmation is then transmitted from the mobile phone directly into the GLS central tracking and tracing IT system. Customers can thus check their shipment status about 15 minutes after delivery. Up to now, the data was first transferred when the delivery van returned to the depot, meaning customers had to wait several hours for tracking availability.

Recipients not at home at the time of delivery can also check where their shipment has been held: at a neighbour’s, at a GLS parcel shop or back at the depot.

GLS said that the next step will be to extend real-time tracking to further European subsidiaries.
