UPS Express Critical launched

UPS launched UPS Express Critical, a service that allows customers to manifest and track urgent shipments with a single call center, one bill and one Web site.

UPS Critical allows package shippers to bill their shipments on their package account.

The new service can also offer shippers transportation combinations of planes and trucks – in one case, UPS said, an auto parts wholesale distributor in Ohio was able to take orders late into the evening and still reach dealers with shipments before normal business hours the next morning.

UPS competitor FedEx has a similar service, FedEx Custom Critical.

Urgent shipping customers can use the single-point system whether they”re using UPS SonicAir, UPS Airlines or UPS Freight.

Bahrain joins GCC study on pan-Gulf postal firm

Bahrain has joined other GCC states in studying the establishment of a pan-Gulf mail transportation company. The company is aimed at streamlining and speeding up mail transportation within the Gulf region.

A preliminary meeting to discuss the project was held in Dubai.

The Bahrain Post was represented by chief of international postal relations Faisal Al Dallal.

The project is in its initial stages and the authorities are currently carrying out a feasibility study, Mr Al Dallal told the GDN.

“This was the second meeting of a special committee of representatives from GCC postal administrations,” he revealed.

“The committee agreed on the framework of the financial and operations model for the proposed company.”

Committee members presented information gathered from several GCC states on the status of transportation of postal mails and couriers, said Mr Al Dallal.

“The proposed company may have to compete with private courier companies,” he noted.

“Being a government organization, it may compete in quality by providing the most cost-effective service.

“Initially, it may launch services within the Gulf, but it would be eventually extended to international destinations.”

Another meeting will be held after four weeks, probably at the GCC Secretariat in Riyadh.

This meeting is expected to be attended by postal directors from all the six GCC states.

A representative from the GCC Secretariat also attended the Dubai meeting.

UPS has moved way beyond boxes

UPS ranks among the top freight haulers at Miami International Airport, the busiest international cargo airport in the country.

The company’s sprawling warehouse in Miami also stores goods from China to be shipped out as needed to Central America and beyond.

Over the past decade, UPS has been on a buying binge to expand “end-to-end” services to clients in Latin America.

It bought Miami-based carrier Challenge Air Cargo, acquiring key flight routes to the region. It bought a customs brokerage to help ease the flow of goods across borders. Plus, it bought an information technology parts and service business that sends technicians to fix computers and critical equipment at banks and other businesses in Latin America, drawing on parts that UPS ships and stores.

UPS now employs more than 5,000 people in its Latin American regional operations, including hundreds in Miami.

One fast-growing business segment is running warehouses and distribution for clients, using its high-tech systems.

Services now run the gamut from dispatching some 400 field engineers to fixing computers to financing its customers.

Through UPS Capital, the company helps clients with billing and collections. It even offers loans for companies to expand and trade more through UPS.

Analysts say UPS distinguishes itself from fellow delivery giants FedEx and DHL by its attention to detail and well-engineered processes: Driver manuals provide routes with fewer left-hand turns to save time at intersections. It is the only one to offer financing. And it is by far the most profitable, said analyst Jindel.

For the future, opportunities still abound. UPS aims to expand business within countries overseas, such as trucking between Chinese cities.
