Poste Italiane Ready for Privatisation, Listing End-2004

Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane SpA will be ready for privatisation and listing on the stock exchange at the end of 2004, the CEO of Poste Italiane, Massimo Sarmi, said on August 6, 2004.

Poste Italiane is developing according to the expectations, and all the objectives, included in the the industrial plan, have been already achieved, Sarmi said.

According to Sarmi, although the company is ready for listing on the stock exchange, Poste Italiane will need between 12 and 18 months to prepare its initial public offering (IPO).

To make matters worse, the quality of Italian postal services was poor, public confidence in mail had suffered, and operating losses were nothing unusual.

If the post office was to remain an important part of Italy’s – and Europe’s – economic and communications landscape, a radical transformation clearly would be needed. Cost-cutting alone wouldn’t be enough. The quality, scope and cost-efficiency of mailing services had to improve.

Poste Italiane invests EUR400m in digital platform

Italian state-owned postal service provider Poste Italiane has invested some EUR400m (USD495.8m) in technical innovation, the company said on July 10, 2004. Poste Italiane will use the investment for the construction of a new digital terrestrial platform for service integration, for employees training and for introducing e-commerce.
