Japan Post eager to enter other Asian markets

Japan Post President Masaharu Ikuta said Wednesday he plans to strengthen international competitiveness of the public corporation’s postal service so that it can expand its mail delivery service to other Asian countries.

Speaking at a lecture for Kyodo News subscribers in Tokyo, Ikuta said, “We are making a belated attempt to boost our international competitiveness in order to advance into other Asian markets.”

DHL extends time definite delivery service to Asian packages

DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has enhanced its Time Definite Delivery (TDD) service across Asia and the Pacific region as demand increases for such services.

In a statement, DHL said TDD service, which offers the latest possible collection times for guaranteed early next-day deliveries, would be expanded to include declared-value packages up to a certain limit. It said TDD, which comprises of StartDay Express offering next day door-to-door delivery by 9am and MidDay Express which offers next day door-to-door delivery by noon, previously only catered to documents.

FedEx Asian hub still six years away as hurdles remain

FedEx, Asia’s No2 courier company by sales, does not expect its new Asia-Pacific hub to open for at least six years, according to depositions it made to the United States Department of Transportation at the weekend.

The company, which is courting the managers of airports in Guangzhou and the Philippines, said hurdles such as operating and customs agreements had to be overcome before construction of a “major physical plant, representing an extremely significant investment”, could begin. FedEx was responding to official queries from rival United Parcel Service (UPS) about why it had applied for more flights to Shenzhen next month under the new Sino-US air services agreement if Guangzhou was the “frontrunner” to become its Asia-Pacific hub.

Robust demand prompts DHL to increase capacity from Hong Kong

Logistics firm DHL Express has increased payload capacity on its dedicated Hong Kong-Shanghai and Hong Kong-Manila services in response to increasing demand and surging intra-Asia shipment volumes. On June 21, DHL upgraded the payload capacity of the Hong Kong-Manila service, now operated by an Airbus A330-300 passenger aircraft four times weekly, from Monday to Thursday. The A330-300 passenger aircraft has a lower deck capacity of about 20 tons in various container and pallet configurations.

On June 16, capacity on the Hong-Kong Shanghai service was also increased by 60%, and began to be operated by an Airbus A300B4 freighter with a capacity of 35 tons. The aircraft can accommodate 18 main deck pallets and up to 20 lower deck containers.

Japanese Government to resume postal privatisation talks next week

Economic and fiscal policy minister Heizo Takenaka said Tuesday the government will resume discussions on postal privatization next week and draw up a final report on the issue in September.

“We will soon start full-fledged discussions on postal privatization,” Takenaka said at a news conference, suggesting that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy will restart the discussions next week.
