Read MoreState-owned Japan Post Holdings Co Ltd said on Tuesday it may buy a stake in Lawson Inc., Japan’s third-largest convenience store chain, in the latest move to combine postal and retailing.
The two companies said that within three years there would be 800 stores selling Lawson products and postal services.
“Until Japan Post goes public, it won’t be possible for both companies to hold each other’s shares at the same time. But so long as it is fine for just one side to take stake for a while, we can acquire Lawson shares,” said Yoshifumi Nishikawa, the president of Japan Post.
He added that the company had yet to determine how many Lawson shares it would buy.
While some convenience store chains, including Yamazaki Daily Store, owned by Yamazaki Baking Co Ltd, have teamed up with Japan Post to deliver packages, Lawson has been the most aggressive to partner up with the state-run postal firm.
Lawson has placed mailboxes in all its stores and operates five branches inside post offices. The two companies are cooperating to deliver mail in Kochi prefecture in western Japan.
Japan Post is the holding firm of four businesses — mail delivery, banking, life insurance and counter services — which split into four companies in October.
The banking and insurance businesses are set to be privatised sometime by 2017, but the government does not plan to privatise the mail delivery and counter service operations.
Read MoreIn recent years there has been an increase in the number of press articles and statements from posts predicting that mail volumes would decline. New technologies and process innovations have been introduced, preoccupying researchers and managers in the postal and mailing industries with the impact of accelerating electronic substitution and changing customer behaviors. What are the actual trends that emerge from examining in detail the best information available from key countries? What historical perspectives, trends and emerging patterns may be useful in understanding how mail volumes may evolve in the future? The purpose of this paper is to provide further insight into the key trends identified and discussed in the previous Mail Trends Analyses by comprehensively examining the evolution of mail and analyzing postal volumes along key variables that influence mail demand. This paper builds on the considerable research that followed the original mail trends analysis and was documented in the Background Papers published at www.postinsight.pb.com for the project: “Electronic Substitution for Mail: Models and Results, Myth and Reality.” The paper also takes advantage of recent work in the study of the “Future of Mail”, also on postinsight.pb.com.
Read MoreDeutsche Post World Net is the first logistics company in Europe to trial hybrid trucks in its operations. The go-ahead for the largest fleet test in the company’s history was given on January 29, 2008 during the World Mobility Forum in Stuttgart. Andreas Renschler, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Daimler Trucks, today handed over the first two vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid and a Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, to Deutsche Post World Net.
The trial will initially include DHL Express operations in the UK as well as mail transport in Germany. In the coming months further Daimler hybrid vehicles will be integrated into the DHL fleet.
DHL can already draw on past experiences with hybrid vehicles in Japan where DHL has been successfully using the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid since July 2006.
Deutsche Post World Net is currently working on a comprehensive climate protection program for the entire Group. One point of focus is the use of alternative drives, such as electric, gas and hybrid engines. With its DHL Innovation Center, opened in March 2007, the Group thus is leading in technologies and innovations. It is facing up to its responsibility as the world’s market leader in logistics and helping to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Read MoreDHL opened this new Express Center in the KNT Tourist Nihonbashi Sales Office under a business entrustment agreement with KNT Tourist Co., Ltd., a travel agency operated by Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd. The new Express Center will accept documents and packages dropped off at the facility by DHL account holders.
Notably, the new DHL Nihonbashi Express Center is the first location in Japan to offer the DHL Simple Pack Service, an easy-to-use service featuring a simplified fee structure. The DHL Simple Pack Service offers dedicated envelopes and boxes, the fees for which are not calculated according to weight but rather according to destination zone (Asia Pacific, America, or Europe / Other regions). These fixed fees are not subject to adjustments based on monthly rate fluctuations in jet fuel surcharges.
The DHL Nihonbashi Express Center is located in the historic Nihonbashi area, Japan’s financial center and an important business district with roots dating back to the Edo Period. The large concentration of companies and proximity to the Shin-Nihonbashi Station and many other JR and subway stations mean convenient access for customers to drop off shipments on their way to/from work, as well as while shopping or other leisure activities. The new Express Center is expected to meet the anticipated high demand from not only corporate customers but also office workers, business travelers, as well as tourists who wish to send personal shipments to overseas destinations.
