Japan Post to Accelerate Restructuring before Privatization

Japan Post said Wednesday it plans to scrap mail pickup and delivery services at 1,048 of 4,696 post offices with such functions across the country, in a bid to accelerate the pace of reorganization ahead of its privatization in October 2007. The privatization of Japan Post will split the public enterprise’s postal insurance, postal savings, mail, and over-the-counter operations into four separate companies, all of which will be placed under a holding company.

TNT May Mull Options Other Than JV with Japan Post

Dutch TNT NV has hinted at a possibility of seeking a business alliance in Japan with a party other than Japan Post.

TNT showed the stance in a statement issued in response to recent media reports that Japan Post is set to scrap its agreement with TNT to form a joint venture to offer transport services in Asia due to a discord over the envisaged firm’s business strategy.

Myanmar international express mail services to expand to 30 more countries

The state-run Myanmar International Express Mail Services (EMS) will expand its services to 30 more countries starting July 1, the local Weekly Eleven News reported Tuesday.

The Myanmar EMS International under the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs is currently rendering services to 32 countries in Asia and North America.

The expansion would bring the total number of countries to where the EMS International is accessible to 62.

Japan Post gives up plan to enter int'l distribution with TNT

Japan Post’s planned entry into international distribution services with leading Dutch logistics company TNT N.V. is to be scrapped due to differences over their business strategies, Japan Post officials said Tuesday. The decision is seen as a major setback for Japan Post, which will be privatized in October 2007, as it had intended to nurture logistics services around Asia as a new profit-making source, considering its weak earning power in conventional postal services.

Last October, Japan Post and TNT announced a plan to set up a joint venture to work together in international distribution services.

Statement from TNT on relationship with Japan Post

In reaction to articles in the Japanese Press, TNT makes the following statement: On October 31, 2005 TNT and Japan Post announced an intention to establish a joint venture in International Express. For TNT this joint venture would be an addition to its recent acquisition in China and start of a road based network in South East Asia and would form part of its overall strategy to build a leading position in the Asian Express market.

At this stage, parties have not been able to reach agreement on the joint venture; however, TNT continues to explore opportunities for cooperation with Japan Post, including alternative JV structures.
