Kuehne + Nagel opens frozen foods distribution centre in northern Italy Milan

Kuehne + Nagel has taken up operations at its new state-of-the-art warehouse at Casorate Primo (PV). The new multi-user facility is dedicated to the storage and distribution of frozen foods and will initially serve the 800 points of sale of Italian retailers Eurospin, PAM and Billa across northern Italy.

Constructed on a 45.000 sqm plot, the site is strategically located southwest of the Milan ring road close to the A7 motorway; an ideal gateway to serve the whole northern part of the Italian peninsula. The new distribution centre provides over 12,000 sqm of warehouse space and a temperature-controlled (-28°C) storage volume of 140,000 cubic metres across two cells. In a next phase of construction warehouse space can be extended to 17,000 sqm. The facility allows for the outbound handling of up to 8 million cases a year.

These are distributed across northern Italy, including Tuscany, via Kuehne + Nagel’s dedicated road transport network. The building complies with the strictest security and environmental requirements. It is equipped with a grid-connected photovoltaic generator, and 8,000 sqm of solar panels have been installed on its roof. Additionally, it features the latest state-of-the-art warehouse technology (radio frequency and voice picking), thereby significantly enhancing operations in terms of ergonomics, a key factor in the frozen foods sector.

SNCF may spend another 2 bln to 3 bln euros after Geodis acquisition – chairman

SNCF may spend another 2 billion to 3 billion euros on investments on top of the 600 million it is offering to pay for shares it does not already own in Geodis, Guillaume Pepy, chairman of the state-owned railway operator, told Le Figaro newspaper.

He plans further acquisitions, including an imminent one in Europe, and he is interested in port services to complete the company’s offering, Pepy said in an interview with the daily.

‘In a few days we will announce the acquisition of a continental European rail operator, which will open the door for us to new countries, notably Eastern Europe,’ he said.

The acquisition of Geodis, in which SNCF currently owns 42.37 percent, will make the transport of goods the group’s biggest division in terms of sales, Pepy said.

SNCF-Geodis will be among the world’s top five logistics groups, behind Deutsche Post AG unit DHL, Deutsche Bahn and Kuehne & Nagel International AG, the SNCF chairman said.

The Geodis deal will lift SNCF’s debt to equity ratio from 0.5 to 0.6, which is still only one-third of the level of Deutsche Bahn, and the imminent acquisition will not fundamentally alter those figures, he said.

‘That means we can still envisage profitable investments of 2 billion to 3 billion euros,’ Pepy said.

Shares in Geodis soared 30 percent today after Pepy unveiled that SNCF plans to offer 135 euros per share for the rest of the transport company.

Deutsche Post declines to comment on report it bid for Beiersdorf logistics

A spokesman for Deutsche Post World Net AG declined to comment on a report it bid for a Beiersdorf AG contract, eventually concluded with Kuehne & Nagel International AG, to out-source logistics operations at its main Hamburg warehouse.

Beiersdorf, the German consumer goods company, yesterday said Kuehne & Nagel will handle its Hamburg logistics as well as the export of goods to subsidiaries abroad, but did not disclose financial details. The contract concludes its efforts to restructure its complete logistics chain.

A report in Die Welt today said the contract has a value of more than 1 bln eur, and that Deutsche Post’s express unit bid as well, not citing its sources.

The report said the contract is a major set-back to Deutsche Post, which is the market leader in German contract logistics.

Under contract logistics, companies out-source their complete integrated supply chain to logistics companies, for which these contracts offer higher margins than ordinary transport logistics.
