Possible takeover for Christian Salvesen

Logistics firm Christian Salvesen has revealed that it has been approached by two separate parties with a view to a possible takeover of the company. The news comes as little surprise as industry experts have long regarded Salvesen as the weakest of the UK publicly listed 3PLs.

Speculation surrounds the identity of the two suitors although UK rival Wincanton is tipped by many as a likely candidate.

However there is any number of other potential firms lined up to snap up Salvesen. French operator Norbert Dentressangle has made no secret of its desire to grow substantially through acquisitions and other foreign businesses like Kuehne + Nagel and Deutsche Bahn could also be in the running.

As an outside bet TDG could be looking to revive its aborted merger plans with Salvesen from several years ago.

Salvesen share price has risen 26 pct to 65 p on the back of the news, and its board confirms that discussions are continuing, although it cautions: There can be no certainty that a formal offer for the Company will be forthcoming or as to the terms on which any offer might be made.

Logistics major Kuehne + Nagel begins construction at Dubai Logistics City

Kuehne + Nagel, one of the world’s leading logistics companies, has begun construction on its state-of-the-art logistics facility in Dubai Logistics City (DLC), set to become the world’s largest supply chain community within Dubai World Central (DWC) – the huge city-within-a-city taking shape at Jebel Ali in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The facility, for which Kuehne + Nagel has leased land on a long-term basis, paves the way for the development of the company’s Dubai base into the principal Kuehne + Nagel distribution hub for the Middle East.

The new facility will become operational mid next year upon completion of the first phase of construction, featuring 17,000 square meters of logistics and warehouse space – with the option to expand to a total of 30,000 square meters. The new facility will complement the company’s existing 16,000 square meter logistics terminal in the Jebel Ali Free Zone.

Phase one of the new facility will be equipped with temperature controlled VNA (very narrow aisle) racking and conventional ambient racking. Total capacity will exceed 20,000 pallet locations, with over 5,000 square meters of handling area for value added services like kitting and final assembly activities. The building will be a modern shared logistics environment for customers across different industries. Special security requirements and dedicated storage and handling equipment for customers from the high tech and pharma industries are also implemented in phase one.

DWC includes Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB), which when completed will be the world’s largest airport with a capacity equal to that of Chicago O’Hare and London Heathrow combined; and specialised free zones such as Dubai Logistics City and DWC Aviation City.

Kuehne + Nagel, AstraZeneca ink new pact

Kuehne + Nagel (K + N) has inked a new pact with UK-based drug maker AstraZeneca to provide the global cold chain air and sea freight for some of its products.

Under the contract, K + N will facilitate the transportation one of AstraZeneca’s statins, as well as an oncology drug and an anesthetic, among other medicines, and some active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), from production sites in the UK, Sweden, France, Italy and Germany, to destinations in the Middle East, Japan, Africa and the USA.

The pharmaceutical products it has been charged with are in both emulsion and solid form and must be maintained within a stipulated temperature range, said K + N.

So far this is exactly what they have been doing. Aside from the new K + N deal, in May AstraZeneca awarded UK-based NYK Logistics a two-and-a-half-year contract for the distribution of its drugs throughout Europe, worth GBP 6m (EUR 8.9m).

NYK said at the time that the arrangement would bring together the distribution operations of AstraZeneca’s European manufacturing facilities for the first time, as until now, each plant operated independently and was responsible for its own transportation.

Under the terms of the contract, NYK will use its pan-European network of road transport partners to provide AstraZeneca with the temperature-controlled distribution of almost 50,000 pallets of product per year from AstraZeneca’s 10 manufacturing facilities across the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden to 30 delivery points throughout Europe.

The European contract logistics market is currently flourishing, and recent research from Analytiqa revealed that spending on outsourced logistics services in the European pharma industry is likely to exceed USD 2bn in 2011 as more and more opportunities arise for 3PL providers.
