MP says – Fix Canada Post before raising prices

A proposed one-cent increase in the price of stamps for domestic mail is a “cash grab” by Canada Post that the government should halt because of spending problems at the Crown corporation, Conservative MP Brian Pallister said yesterday.

Canada Post should first demonstrate it has fixed internal management deficiencies uncovered this year in an audit by Deloitte Touche, including $35m in untendered contracts awarded to Liberal-friendly companies, Mr. Pallister said. The stamp price hike, which will raise the price of a letter stamp for domestic mail to 50 cents – is scheduled for approval by the Treasury Board next
week, Mr. Pallister said.

Canada Post announced the price increases last June, to take effect Jan. 17.

Robbie Anderson, managing director Planning & Support of Continental Airlines Cargo, was the first panel speaker to address this topic. After a general overview of Continental Airlines’ route network, the fleet (including 18 B777-200s) and the company’s cargo division, he presented details of the USPS mail scanning and cargo revenue management initiatives on which his division had worked. Both initiatives had substantially improved revenues, Anderson said. “Any time we have opportunities within the cargo department to leverage margins and revenues, we get quite a bit of interest at the executive level,” Anderson said.

Deutsche Post meets ver.di accusations

Deutsche Post has defended itself against accusations by trade union ver.di that separating letter sorting and delivery will lead to a drop in quality. Ver.di says that plans by Deutsche Post to use machines to automatically sort post by 2007, instead of postal workers doing it themselves will mean workers being forced to work part-time, which in turn would lead to a drop in quality. The union has also told Deutsche Post that its workers are disenchanted and working a mountain of overtime.
