DMA pressures parties to avert postal strike

The DMA (UK) is urging Royal Mail and postal workers to reach an agreement over pay conditions and avert a national strike that could plunge the direct marketing industry into crisis. A DMA spokesman says: “We can ill afford action in this economic climate. Consumers wouldn’t be able to respond, wouldn’t have their orders fulfilled, and it would damage their confidence in the medium. “Advertisers may make switches on their media schedules, and the Royal Mail recovery plan could be thrown into jeopardy. We’re asking both parties to use common sense.”

UK Royal Mail writes to staff over pay offer

Royal Mail Has written to its 160,000 postmen and women in a bid to head off the threat of its first national strike over pay in seven years.

CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward immediately called Mr Leighton’s letter a “direct snub” to his negotiating team, and said the union was not lifting the strike threat.

AN Post’s incoming chief executive, Donal Curtin, had to hit the groundrunning after taking up his position three weeks ago. Communications Regulator Etain Doyle has been considering the State company’s application for an increase in the price of a stamp for domestic mail from 41 to 48. The EUR18m in additional revenue which the stamp price increase will generate in a fullyear is unlikely, however, to pull the mail group back into the black in the current year.
