Postal Service Governor Ellen Williams appointed to new term (U.S)

President George W. Bush has appointed Postal Service Board of Governors member Ellen C. Williams of Kentucky to an additional term that expires Dec. 8, 2014. Governor Williams is Vice Chair of the Board’s Compensation and Management Resources Committee and is a member of the Government Relations and Regulatory Committee.

Governor Williams joined the Board of Governors in 2006 after President Bush appointed her to serve the remainder of an unexpired term.

After more than 25 years in government and politics, including serving as Vice Chairman of the Kentucky Public Service Commission, Governor Williams launched her own business, Ellen C. Williams, LLC, a government affairs and lobbying firm.

Governor Williams is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and lives in Anderson County, KY.

U.S. Postal Service hit hard by gas prices

Rising gas prices are hitting the budgets of businesses that maintain fleets of vehicles.
It now costs the U.S. Postal Service USD 8 million every time there is a one cent increase in the price of gasoline according to postal authorities.
Although the Post Service gets discounts because of bulk purchases of fuel, the price increases are forcing officials to find more cost efficient ways to operate.
Some changes being considered include packing mail more tightly to reduce the number of vehicles needed for transportation.

India Postmaster: 'Post offices across India to be interlinked soon'

All the post offices across the country will be inter-linked in about a year’s time, a senior postal department officer said here on Tuesday.
Soon, the Indian Post will also function as a full-fledged banking organisation, he said, adding postal department was also considering to rent out prime spaces it had at several places for retail and other business.
Kumar said the postal department has also tied up with ‘Kerala Spices Board’ under which, one can place an order through the postal department for getting spices delivered at their doorsteps by post.
Besides, the department had also tied up with Assam tea and Tirupati prasad so that one can get these materials through post, he added.
Kumar said the department was also forging ties with telcos like BSNL, Reliance, Vodafone and Airtel to provide range of services and products like ‘Retail post’ and ‘Bill Mail Service’ verification of addresses and delivery of bills.
The post offices already distributes coins of denomination rupee one and two on the behalf of RBI, he said adding that the department was also reaching out to universities and institutions for the sale of their prospectus and other material under ‘Retail post.’

Decision On Three Post Office Branches On The Western Isles

Post Office Ltd today (Tuesday) announced final decisions on the future of three Post Office branches in the Network Change programme for the Northern and Western Isles.

The decision follows a period of further review after the six-week public consultation, which ended on April 16 2008.

The branch at Skigersta on the Isle of Lewis has been withdrawn as a result of feedback received during consultation and during the period of further review and will now remain open.

The closures of Bragar on the Isle of Lewis and Northton on the Isle of Harris are confirmed today and they will close at the end of July at the earliest.

These two closures will mean that a total of 15 branches will close under the Northern and Western Isles plan. Post Office® services will continue to be provided through a network of 113 branches, which supports the national accessibility criteria introduced by the UK Government and ensures that 97% of the area’s population will either see no change to their existing branch or will remain within one mile (by road distance) of an alternative branch.
