Record profits for UK Royal Mail

Royal Mail will unveil record profits of nearly GBP600m – GBP1.6m a day – this week, triggering an incentive scheme that will give its 180,000 employees a minimum bonus of GBP400 each. Last year, Royal Mail’s profits were GBP537m. This year, helped by stamp price increases, profits are expected to go up by ten per cent and it will be able to report that all its businesses are now in profit. At the same time, the Government is expected to give its support in principle to a radical restructuring plan that would give workers shares in the business and about GBP1.3bn to inject in the pension scheme.

TNT Post acquires TWM Italia

TNT Post has acquired the TMW Italia company in order to strengthen its advertising mail offering. TWM Italia is a historic player in the distribution of “door to door” or unaddressed advertising material. Set up in 1990 by entrepreneur Danilo Tosi, TWM Italia’s geographical distribution coverage focuses mainly on Emilia and Eastern Lombardy, with operations offices located in the provinces of Piacenza, Cremona, Lodi, Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia, Parma, Modena, Livorno, Bologna and Bari. Even before this acquisition TNT Post was one of the leading “door to door” companies; this deal enables it to double its market share, creating a strong hub in a sector characterized by extreme fragmentation: approximately 400 players in a market with an estimated value of 250 million euros in 2005.

Director Tricia Dow said: “The questionmark that lies over the long-term future of rural post offices has been well reported.

“We want to gather information ahead of the promised Government consultation on what the future could be.

“The question of distance is a key one in Scotland.

“Across the whole of the UK, Post Office Ltd tell us that, in 2005, only 0.3% of households lived more than 5km from a post office.

“We doubt that is the case in many parts of Scotland. Now we need to prove it.

The OIAG state holding company yesterday said the deal would be priced at Euros 17-Euros 19 a share. The final level, subject to bookbuilding, will probably be set on May 30, with trading starting the following day.
