Global Mail Service Expanded

The US Postal Service is expanding its agreement with Royal Mail Group’s parcel delivery company, General Logistics System (GLS) for delivery of Global Express Mail (GEM) to Europe from 6 to 14 countries. GLS currently delivers GEM items to 6 countries: Austria, Denmark, Germany, France, Netherlands, and Sweden. The 8 additional countries to which GLS will deliver GEM items effective March 29, 2003, are Belgium, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, San Marino, Switzerland, and Vatican City. Note that San Marino and the Vatican City are being added to the countries that can be reached using GEM.

Maltapost to shed 226 jobs

Company working with unions and government for redeployment of workers

Maltapost is to make 226 workers redundant, the company Chief Executive Robert Lake said.

Maltapost said the move is necessary to sustain the future economic viability of the company.

The job losses will be phased in over the next year and will see the Maltapost’s workforce reduced from 816 to 500 by September 2003.

Yet Another Resignation At Maltapost

Yet another hiccup at Maltapost following the partial privatisation and takeover of management by New Zealand’s Transend, with the expatriate occupying the second most senior management post tendering his resignation.

Maltapost’s general manager (postal services), Pat Burke, has tendered his resignation. The Maltapost board of directors is believed to have accepted Mr Burke’s resignation. Maltapost said that Mr Burke relinquished his post for personal reasons.
