Saudi Post ready for the day of the RFID

Saudi Post’s home delivery plans will be underpinned by one of the largest radio frequency identification (RFID) projects in the world, according to sources. The national postal carrier is understood to be planning to install millions of RFID-enabled post-boxes across the Kingdom as part of a USD270million project to support its new home delivery service, Wasel.
The Wasel project, a key step in Saudi Post’s efforts to transform itself prior to privatisation, will eliminate the need for customers to collect mail from post offices, as the postal service will deliver and collect mail from their homes instead.

TNT Middle East route boost

TNT Express is set to expand its Middle East Road Network with the addition of five new routes next year. The carrier has embarked on an aggressive expansion starting with its Day Definite service, which guarantees customers the exact number of days to delivery. Steve Barrett, TNT’s newly-promoted MERN operations manager said: ‘The road network is the backbone of TNT’s regional strategy and we plan to launch routes linking the Gulf countries with the wider Middle East and Europe next year. ‘We also have excellent relationships with authorities at border points and a good understanding of import-export regulations throughout the region.

Emirates Post’s Dubai Airport Mail Transit Hub handled record mail during 2004

Among the regular clients of the Hub are GATS UK, British Royal Mail and the UK and US offices of Deutsche Post. Swiss Post and Kuwait Post were the two major clients that joined the hub during 2005, in addition to several other postal organizations. The Dubai Airport Mail Transit Hub of Emirates Post consolidated its position as the preferred regional mail distribution centre by handling 1,062,720 kg of international mail during 2004, against 984,000 kg in 2003. The Dubai Airport Mail Transit Hub was established in 2001 to serve as the regional mail hub for mail bound for the GCC, the rest of the Middle East, North and East Africa, the Far East and Indian Subcontinent.

Dubai will host UPU’s 2006 Strategy Conference

The Universal Postal Union today announced in Dubai that it has selected the United Arab Emirates as the venue for its high-level Strategy Conference in November 2006. The UPU Strategy Conference, held every four years, takes stock of the progress achieved in meeting the objectives of the World Postal Strategy adopted at the previous Congress and charts the direction for Posts until the next one, which will be held in Nairobi in 2008. “The UAE has been making its presence felt on the global map through a number of dynamic initiatives, and we are confident that Emirates Post will spare no efforts in making this event a success,” said James Gunderson, Director, Office of the Director General, Strategic Planning and Communication, at the UPU’s International Bureau, during a press conference.

DHL UAE steps up regional road freight business with USD3.5 million Jebel Ali hub

DHL UAE has stepped up its express logistics and road freight capability with the opening of a USD3.5 million state-of-the-art express logistics centre in Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ), Dubai. The new facility will not only bolster DHL’s traditional express delivery capabilities, but will also provide a solid platform to capitalise on the growing demand for tailored express logistics solutions and road freight. ‘Over the past 12 months we have managed a 214% increase in weight handled through the Jebel Ali Free Zone. Customer demand continues to rocket and our new facility will provide us with the additional capacity necessary to offer even more customers full express logistics solutions,’ said David Wild, General Manager, DHL UAE. DHL’s new facility will manage and process throughput arriving in Jebel Ali by road, air or sea for rapid distribution by road or air. A fast evolving part of this market is coming from road haulage, with more international players now focussing on the segment.
