Sri Lanka to upgrade postal services

Sri Lanka’s Postal Department said it will prepare a budget to obtain fi – nancial assistance from the Treasury to modernise postal services and upgrade its facilities, Post Master General Shervyn Senadheera told the Sunday Observer.

He said postal services across the globe have moved into fi nancial transactions, banking services, logistics and other value added services meeting customer expectations as a one-stop shop. “Postal services are no more limited to delivering letters and selling stamps. Services that fulfi l wider customer needs in a professional manner are necessary today” he said.

Lack of communication technology and IT facilities in the postal department are the major obstacles to provide a better service to the people. He said building network facilities, improving the technology and providing agency services over the counter are some of the key services that will bring additional revenue to the department. The Department which was set up in 1798 has 20,000 employees, 637 post offi ces and 3,500 sub post offi ces. Over 7,000 postmen carry out a major task.

PostNet Goes to Panama

Since opening its first location in 1993, PostNet has been a one-stop shop for the small business owner. Fourteen years later, the Denver-based company is bringing their signature services to Panama – the first step in the brand’s expansion into Central America.

Pranas Lukauskis, CEO of Panaoutsource & Mail S.A., has acquired the master franchise for PostNet in Panama and will have a soft opening for PostNet Panama on September 20th with a grand opening tentatively scheduled for October 11th. Panaoutsource has done everything to customize their business for the Panamanian market: in addition to global shipping companies such as FedEx, DHL and UPS, Panaoutsource will also utilize the services of regional companies Copa Airlines Courier and Grupo Zoom. Once the Panama City business is running smoothly, Panaoutsource plans to open four additional locations across the country by 2010.

“Our presence in Central America begins in Panama but certainly won’t end there,” said Brian Spindel, PostNet’s co-founder and COO. “Over the next few years, we plan to expand into several other Central American countries including Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras.”

PostNet offers a worldwide network of full-service, diversified business centers to serve the increasing business services needs of small, home-based and start-up entrepreneurial business ventures. Franchised PostNet locations offer digital copy and document services, printing and finishing services, computer/Internet services and more designed to provide one-stop service to the SOHO (small office/home office) market. PostNet’s goal is to have 1,500 global franchises within three to five years. Estimates call for 50 locations to be added in 2007.

MPs condemn Royal Mail’s lack of vision over post offices

MPs condemned Royal Mail for lacking imagination and entrepreneurial flair in the way in which it manages its loss-making post office network.

The Trade and Industry Select Committee criticised the Government for not taking more responsibility for looking after the network rather than leaving it to Royal Mail.

It said that the postal group had “failed to show sufficient imagination or entrepreneurial flair in developing services so far, or properly to understand the realities of managing a network of often very small businesses”.

The criticism comes as 2,500 more post offices are about to close because the network is unprofitable. The programme of closures was agreed by the Department of Trade and Industry ahead of a GBP 3.9 billion rescue package for the postal group.

Although the all-party group of MPs said that new management at Royal Mail’s post office division “seems to be awakening from its lethargy”, they added: “We think that the Government, as sole shareholder and representative of the taxpayer, has a responsibility to ensure that Royal Mail Group as a whole gives proper attention to increasing the competitiveness of the network rather than just managing its decline.”

The committee said that there could be more closures “sooner rather than later” unless the Government gave proper attention to maintaining the network after its restructuring.
