DHL establishes new international gateway in Southern California

DHL opened its new international gateway in Southern California to enhance service quality and meet the growing needs of DHL customers shipping to and from Asia-Pacific and the Western United States.

To establish the new International Gateway operation, DHL has invested nearly USD 3 million at its West Coast Distribution Facility in Riverside, Calif., adding on-site offices specifically for providing customs-processing and clearance functions related to DHL international shipments upon arrival. The newly expanded operation will come fully online with the arrival on Tuesday, March 27 of a flight from DHL’s Central Asia SuperHub in Hong Kong into the facility.

DHL’s Riverside ground and air hub personnel will process letters and packages as they are off loaded from the Asia-Pacific flight and channeled directly into the DHL West Coast distribution network, making for faster door-to-door delivery of DHL customer shipments from Asia-Pacific to the Western U.S.

The opening of DHL’s sixth U.S. International Gateway will be the company’s third in California. In addition to the new international gateway operation in Riverside, DHL maintains five other U.S. gateways operations in Wilmington, Ohio; Miami; New York; Los Angeles and San Francisco.

UPS Airlines is retiring its fleet of 727s

UPS Airlines was founded in 1988 with seven leased Boeing 727s, and for the next decade the plane remained the backbone of the shipping giant’s growing fleet.
But by August, UPS will fly the last of its 16 remaining 727s to the New Mexico desert, where they’ll be stored.
The planes, built from the early 1960s until August 1984, no longer fit UPS’ needs, spokesman Mark Giuffre said.
UPS has placed several orders for new planes over the past year or two, including 27 Boeing 767-300ER freighters announced last month.
The freighters are to be delivered between 2009 and 2012.
The company also has firm commitments to buy 10 Boeing 747-400 jets to be delivered by next year.

DHL launches new international gateway in Merida, Mexico to serve US-Mexico shipments

DHL today announced the opening of a new gateway in Merida, Mexico to enhance service quality and meet the growing needs of DHL customers shipping across the US-Mexico border.

The recently installed international gateway operation will increase DHL handling capacity by more than 87 percent in the region, enabling the transport of more than 38,000 additional shipments per year. The investment is part of a strategic DHL development plan for Mexico’s Southeastern Region. The strategy will enable DHL to increase its routes and capacity, as well as expand service coverage and provide enhanced customer service.

The new Merida Gateway provides both U.S. and businesses based throughout the region (including those located in Cancun, Ciudad del Carmen, Villahermosa, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and Minatitlan), with a new facility for the transshipment of goods across the US-Mexico border. DHL’s Merida gateway has been authorized by the Mexico national customs authority to operate as a customs facility for the consolidation of the area’s imports and exports.

With the establishment of the Merida gateway, DHL will manage the customs clearance process through a local agent from start to finish, which will reduce average international delivery service times into the cities of Merida, Cancun, Ciudad del Carmen and Campeche from two days to one. DHL customers will receive specialized service by contracting with the agent of their choice.

Before the Merida gateway, shipments bound to the area from the U.S. were processed by Customs in Mexico City. “By having a Merida-based customs agent process shipments, U.S. businesses benefit because DHL can move shipments through customs without intermediate delays,” said Rosano.
