United Parcel Service is expanding mail pickup service by mid-2002

United Parcel Service Inc (Atlanta, GA) will expand its mail pickup service to approximately 30 major US cities by mid-2002. It introduced the service in Dallas, TX, and Atlanta, GA, in spring-2001. UPS is taking advantage of US postal rules that give customers mailing a minimum of 500 pieces at once a discount on first-class rates. UPS collects enough letters to get a discount of two cents for each 34-cent stamp. The savings are passed on to customers, but UPS charges them about $2 for each sack of mail it picks up

Ryder buys Sameday.com fulfillment unit

Ryder System Inc. said it has acquired the fulfillment operations of Sameday.com Inc., a Los Angeles-based supply chain software and services company, for an unspecified amount.

Ryder is taking over Sameday.com’s distribution facilities in Newark and Memphis, adding them to its existing network of warehouses designed to serve the e-commerce needs of customers in the telecommunications, electronic, high-tech, aerospace, apparel and jewelry industries.
