FedEx moves Asia hub to China

FedEx will move its Asia-Pacific transport and distribution centre from the Philippines to Guangzhou, China, the Guangzhou Daily has reported. According to FedEx, the lease of the eight-year-old Asia-Pacific hub in Subic Bay in the Philippines expires in 2007, and the runway and apron at Subic Bay have limited expansion room due to its deep water and hillside boundaries.

Philippine Subic airport expanded for FedEx benefit

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has expanded the Subic Bay International Airport in Olongapo City to accommodate the growing operations of United States air courier giant FedEx.

SBMA Chairman Felicito C. Payumo said yesterday that the 3.74-hectare new land area of the airport is vital in sustaining the operations of FedEx and for the long-term economic development program of the free port zone. The airport had an originally area of 800 hectares.

DHL to put in more funds in Philippines

DHL Express has committed to continue investing in the Philippines despite concerns raised by some foreign investors in the wake of the controversy surrounding the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 project.

German airport operator Fraport AG has filed an arbitration case with the World Bank’s International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes against the Philippine government. Fraport is seeking compensation worth USD425 million for the investment it has made in the yet-to-be-opened Naia 3.DHL Asia Pacific chief executive John Mullen said in an interview that the raging controversy would not deter the firm from making additional investments in the country.

FedEx, UPS win Hong Kong air rights

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service were the big winners when the U.S. Department of Transportation tentatively awarded six airlines Monday the right to operate all-cargo services between Hong Kong and other cities outside the U.S. FedEx and UPS together received tentative rights to 25 of the 40 additional slots available to U.S. cargo carriers under a new bilateral agreement. The express carriers each won the right to six flights immediately to their Asia regional hubs in the Philippines. They have already been operating those flights under interim authority granted by DOT last November.

DHL sets up help desks for traders in Philippines

International courier services provider DHL Worldwide Express Corp. is discussing with the Board of Investments and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority ways to make the Philippines a major trading hub in the region. DHL Philippines country manager Charles Brewer said in an interview yesterday that the company had put some initiatives in place to help make the country more prominent in the global trading map.Among these initiatives is the setting up within the country’s economic zones of help desks for neophyte exporters and importers with 24/7 delivery and pick-up schedules.
