Head of Polish post office fired over report he violated anti-corruption law

Poland’s deputy prime minister dismissed the head of the state-owned post office Thursday following a report that he violated an anti-corruption law by sitting on the supervisory board of an insurance company. Marek Pol, who is also infrastructure minister, dismissed Leszek Kwiatek as general director of Poczta Polska after the daily Gazeta Wyborcza reported that he also had sat on the board of the Polish Reinsurance Association since May 2002, the government said in a statement.

Bank Pocztowy postal bank changes strategy

Poczta Polska national post and Prokom IT company, owners of Bank Pocztowy bank, will increase the company’s initial capital by ZL13m. In October last year, Andrzej Szukalski, head of the bank, told Rzeczpospolita daily that the bank would be capitalised with ZL80-100 and then restructured. The owners’ strategy has now changed and Bank Pocztowy will no longer sell financial products. A change in postal regulations will allow Poczta Polska to distribute financial products itself and the bank will focus on creating these products.

Polish courier express market

While other economic sectors have struggled in the midst of slackening economic growth across Europe, courier services have remained largely unscathed. Although the market is no longer growing at the breakneck pace of 150% a year, as was the case in the late 1990s, it still saw an increase in both the volume and the value of deliveries in 2002.

Of the 51 companies active on the local market, 25 are recent arrivals which registered last year. Despite the increasingly crowded market, all the major operators saw their revenues grow from 20% (Servisco) to 50% (Masterlink).

Post Office takes first steps towards insurance business

The still state-owned Polish post office Poczta Polska (PP) has applied to sector regulators for an insurance licence which would enable it to take its first steps onto new financial products markets. The new firm would sell property, health and life insurance. The application is part of a strategy that hopes to establish a capital group supervising separate operations in four different areas of business: financial products, Internet, traditional postal services and logistics/courier services.
