Liberalized postal market begins to impact on Polish Post

Polish Post is slowly feeling the breath of the competition on the back of the neck, as the market was partially liberalized on May 1. It will be further opened at the beginning of 2006 and become fully liberalized in 2009. “I forecast that we will mainly compete with the German and Dutch post offices, which are the largest operators in Europe. Even worse, they will focus on the most lucrative segments of the market, such as large cities,” said PP’s general director Tadeusz Bartkowiak.

Polish Post Office prepares to face banks

Facing competition from commercial banks, Poczta Polska (PP), the Polish post, is broadening its offer of financial services to individual clients. Bar code reading devices, to be online by Q3 2004, will allow for fast cash transfers to bank accounts from PP offices. Software integration with databases of state-run pension funds will facilitate cash transfers to individuals who collect their pensions at post offices. Along with basic deposit services, PP will also be able to open credit lines, and facilitate credit card transactions.

Poland applies to EU to prolong transition period for adjusting postal services to EU standards

Poland has applied to the EU to prolong until 31 December 2006 the transition period for adjusting postal services to EU standards. The extension will give Polish Post a chance to reform the institution to adjust it to operations on the EU competitive market. The statement explained that the adjustment period will allow Polish Post to carry out development strategy between 2003 and 2006.

Polish Post Office plans to remain unprivatised

The Polish Post plans to turn into a Treasury-owned holding, the post’s director general, Leszek Kwiatek, announced on Friday.

Kwiatek, in Szczecin for the Polish Post’s 9th Congress, said that after the change the post will control a number of companies, which will allow it to strive for new markets.
