ComReg turns down An Post bid for 12c rise in stamp price

An Post’s application for a 25 per cent price rise has been rejected by the regulator ComReg. The State-owned postal firm was seeking a rise in the cost of a standard letter to 60 cent from 48 cent, but ComReg said there was insufficient evidence to support the claim. An Post was granted a rise for large envelopes – from 60 cent to 90 cent – while packets will rise from 96 cent to EUR2. Meanwhile, ComReg yesterday said it intended to appoint a team of accountants or consultants to examine An Post’s operations in further detail. This team will focus on “revenue identification, volume measurement and cost allocation procedures” at the company. ComReg issued a preliminary assessment on the application during the summer but it has now delivered its final position. It is not clear whether An Post may legally challenge the decision.

An Post collection staff vote by two-to-one for new deal

Collection and delivery workers at An Post have voted by almost two-to-one to accept a Labour Court recommendation on major changes to their work practices.

The vote by members of the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) should bring to an end the long-running dispute at the company, which appeared at times to threaten its future.

It also means that more than 8,000 staff in An Post, as well as the company’s pensioners, will receive a pay increase next week of just over 5 per cent due to them under Sustaining Progress.

About 4,500 collection and delivery staff were eligible to vote in the ballot, which concluded yesterday morning.

Despite strong opposition to the recommendation by many postal workers in Dublin in particular, 2,932 union members voted for the deal. It was opposed by 1,486, with seven votes spoiled.

Stamp price gap grows as European postal sector prepares for market opening

The Free and Fair Post Initiative (FFPI) today released its fifth survey
on stamp prices in the European Union (EU). The study, which covers the 25 EU member States, reveals that 20% of EU countries have increased stamp prices in the course of 2005 and that price differences are still wide. The annual comparative analysis of the FFPI points out that prices of stamps for basic domestic letters have increased in 5 member States1 during this year. In addition, the survey reports that the gap in prices between the old and new EU member States is still widening. It is in fact important to notice that costs have risen in 3 countries from the EU-15, therefore further enlarging the difference with the price in the new member States.
