An Post job cuts postponed due to new talks process

A plan by An Post to cut nearly 1,500 jobs as part of a restructuring of its mail service faces a delay of several more months following talks yesterday at the Labour Court. The court is expected today to establish a new talks process between the company and the Communications Workers’ Union, which is resisting proposals for change. An expert group is to be appointed by the court to engage in discussions with the parties and to try and find areas of agreement. It will report back to the court by May 6th. If there are issues still unresolved, the court will issue recommendations within two weeks of that date. That timetable means the company will be at least a year behind schedule with a major restructuring of its mail service, which it had hoped to implement in mid-2004.

Airline postal service to stay in u-turn

Aer Lingus has rescinded its decision not to carry An Post mail to Britain and Europe and is continuing to ferry the post six days a week for the cash-strapped postal company. Last September, as part of further cost cutting moves, the airline announced that it would axe its postal and courier service to Britain and Europe from January 1 this year leaving An Post with no option but to look for another service provider.Aer Lingus had earlier signalled that it would drop cargo services in Europe from the start of this year. At the time An Post chief operating officer Larry Donald said the company would look at alternatives for its outbound mail service and warned there would be a cost issue for An Post which had operating losses of 30m in 2003.

Irish An Post plans for range of bank services

An Post will soon be competing with credit unions when it starts offering a range of banking and financial services, if proposals by senior management are accepted by the board of the company. In a significant shake-up of its commercial strategy, An Post management believes it should offer banking and credit facilities, ATM services and financial products such as home and life insurance to customers. The new financial services portfolio will be put to the board of An Post in the coming months. It is unlikely to include mortgages, opting instead to compete at the lower end of the scale with credit unions.
Donal Curtin, the chief executive of An Post, told a Dail committee on communications last week that he aimed to “capitalise on the footfall in our offices and, in particular, develop a financial services portfolio capable of delivering significant levels of profitable business'”.

Postcode system ‘would double junk mail volumes’ in Ireland

The introduction of postcodes in Ireland is likely to mean a huge increase in the amount of junk mail put through the republic’s letter boxes. Experts say the lack of a postcode system is the only thing that has been holding direct marketers back. They say the experience of other countries suggests the amount of such mail received by households could double. Comreg, the communications industry regulator, is recommending that postcodes be introduced in Ireland, the only country in the European Union not to have them. An Post says it will not pay for the system, but one model favoured by the private post companies is based on lines of longitude and latitude and would not require fresh mapping of the country.

An Post puts off closure of SDS

An Post has had to put off plans to close its loss making SDS parcels division next Monday. The postponment comes as a result of its acceptance last night of a National Implementation Body plan to head off industrial action in the postal services. The company has also lifted the suspension of 68 workers who had been refusing to co-operate with the run down of the operation. The plan has also been accepted by the CWU union, and obliges it to accept a binding Labour Court investigation of the closure plan.
