Irish express players broaden horizons

New PacTrac research data into the Irish parcels and express market shows how European postal operators are increasing their share of both the international and domestic sectors. On the domestic front, of the estimated 6.9m parcels despatched annually by Irish international parcels and express shippers, the domestic post office brands (An Post & SDS) feature predictably strongly, together accounting for 47%. Internationally, of the estimated 1.8m express parcels dispatched annually, just seven brands make up 82% of the market, with DHL (26%) leading the way.

Despite a gloomy economic prognosis, one parcels company believes its niche services can see it through Parcel activity is a good indicator of a country’s economic fortunes. So if the wheels have come off the Irish economy, what does it mean for companies such as Interlink? There are conflicting messages from CEO Brendan O’Neill. The company’s traffic is up 12% this year, averaging 8,500 consignments and 16,000 parcels a night in April, but he admits that yields are under pressure. Overall, the movement of goods in and out of Ireland is static, he believes, revealing a growing disparity between gross domestic and gross national product.

Concern over Irish Post Offices

East Antrim MP Roy Beggs has called on the Government to ensure that new provisions for pension payments will not lead to the demise of the village post office.

Addressing Post Office Minister Stephen Timms in the Commons, Mr Beggs referred to the decision to phase out pension books and replace them with direct payment options through bank or post office accounts.

110% hike in postal charges at An Post Ireland

AN Post has demanded an urgent 110 per cent rise in some postal charges to cover its huge losses. A recovery plan, including reconstructing costs of EUR50million, meant losses of EUR70million have already been predicted for 2002. A letter in a leaked dossier, written by An Post chief executive John Hynes, warns of a “significant trading loss” of EUR9million in post services. An Post hopes to raise the cost of sending registered mail by 34 per cent and the cost of posting small packages by 110 per cent. An Post has now written to communications regulator Etain Doyle asking for price increases to be approved without delay.
