Can this man make An Post shine again

Donal Curtin is tipped to lead the state-owned operation but he will need to live up to his tough image to deliver the goods, write Jane Suiter and Ruth O’Callaghan.

When Tadhg O’Donoghue, chairman of the ESB, told Donal Curtin in June 2001 that his plan to expand operations into Poland through the acquisition of eight electricity supply plants for Euro 1.7 billion had been shot down by Charlie McCreevy, the head of the company’s international division was more than a little taken aback. “He was incandescent with rage,” says one person familiar with the situation.

Curtin, 55, is a man who usually gets his own way and won’t accept second best. He has also emerged as favourite to succeed John Hynes as chief executive of An Post, the embattled state-owned post office. His appointment has still not been finalised by the company’s directors and the company will only confirm that the board has agreed to open negotiations with a “preferred” candidate.

The scale of the task facing the new boss should not be underestimated.

AN Post rejects 'snail mail' tag after delivery rate survey

AN Post last night moved to defend its letter delivery rate in the wake of a survey which showed the company only managed to deliver 73pc of ordinary letters by the next day. The Communications Regulator (ComReg), which monitors An Post’s quality of service inline with European standards, found only three out of four items of ordinary correspondence were delivered the next day. ComReg looked at single piece mail – ordinary correspondence posted by individuals and businesses – and found the delivery rate fell far short of the 94pc target set by the regulator. According to ComReg, this will be addressed in the context of consultation on An Post’spricing proposals, to be launched shortly.

An Post Loses Roadside Letter Box Decision

An Post has threatened a price rise following yesterday’s decision by the communications regulator that the company cannot force customers to accept roadside letter boxes. ComReg chairwoman, Ms Etain Doyle, said An Post would be breaking the law if it went ahead with plans to oblige customers to accept deliveries to a postbox at the side of the road in place of a doorstep service.

EU VAT move could raise stamp prices – AN Post against move

A proposal by the EU to slap VAT on postal services could lead to a sharp hike in the cost of postage stamps. An Post said the proposal is at a very early stage, but has indicated that it is against the move. It said that the issue will be a matter for the Government but warned that if the full rate of VAT is applied at 21pc, this could bump up the price of a postage stamp from 41c to 49c.
